Not great I'm sure, compared to you heavy duty folks. But I did operate outside, starting with 42 F and getting down briefly to 33, but fairly stable at 34 F. Gave up a bit early, as my toes couldn't take more, and the bands seemed shot -- too quiet (except for static) on 80, and 40 was blowing my receiver out with all the big-gun NA contesters (my Ten Tec Century 22, DC with an audio filter, is easily overwhelmed). THANK YOU BRUCE!!! Can't believe that my measley dipole at 30 feet could really punch through to Alaska... well, I guess 'punch' may not be the right word. :-) Actually, the rig did it 2 times! The first time N8ET was at the controls.. boy, you guys sure did work to make that contact!! Then I jumped at the controls, but by that time there musta been 10 different stations calling.. all which were stronger than me! Thanks to Bill, I hung in there, & finally got a good shot at you. Think it took about an hour to do the 1st QSO & mine, with a goodly amount of waiting in between! BTW, Bill (of Kanga USA fame) was in Houston for some work, and HAD to stay the weekend.. took a 3 hour drive to the trusty fire station, & we had some FYBO fun. It was about 65f, with a blue sky & bright sun.. mighty nice February day if you ask me! We used the Sierra on 20, and the modified GQ-40 on 40. I'll see if I can find someplace to upload the digi-pix to, so you can see the op desk. This ain't no spartan sprint mind you! Got to the station about 10:15 local (15 minutes after it started), and proceeded to sling up the antler. The SooperShooter did a great job of getting the line over the trees, but it still took me an hour to get the silly thing up.. even with the help of one of the FD guys. First I got on the 'far' side of one of the trees (supports), and shot over & towards the center, figuring that if I did it that way I could save some of the monofilament line by tying a larger string & pulling back over. Then I'd go back & tie the wire to the string, then back & pull... Balooney! The next time I just stood in the center & shot towards the other tree, cut the mono, tied the string on & then did the pulling.. figured the monofilament wasn't worth the hassle! Then it had too much droop... I got an answer for that... Drove back to the casa & picked up the telescoping 40' fiberglass lineman's pole & stuck it up in the center. Fortunately, there was a dead tree at the middle to lean it up against. Looks like the grand total is 15 qsos, but had a great time visiting with Bill, & he got to work about 5 guys also. Lotsa activity, especially on 20. Guess I sold my QRP+ too soon.. would have liked to check out 15 & 10. Guess we'll hear more as folks thaw out! Shut down about 4:30 local... stayed on long enough to get the 60 degree multiplier!! Figured that competition with the Sprint would do me in. Thanks to all, had a great time at 1 watt cu Tim W5FN From owner-qrp-l@Lehigh.EDU Sat Feb 7 23:19:19 1998 Received: from fidoii.CC.lehigh.EDU (fidoii.CC.lehigh.EDU [128.180.1.4]) by oucsace.cs.ohiou.edu (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id XAA00241 for ; Sat, 7 Feb 1998 23:19:18 -0500 (EST) Received: from Lehigh.EDU ([127.0.0.1]) by fidoii.cc.Lehigh.EDU with SMTP id <12590-25400>; Sat, 7 Feb 1998 23:18:13 -0500 Received: from nss4.cc.Lehigh.EDU ([128.180.1.13]) by fidoii.cc.Lehigh.EDU with ESMTP id <12533-25400>; Sat, 7 Feb 1998 23:17:42 -0500 Received: from icefog.polarnet.com (root@icefog.polarnet.com [204.119.24.13]) by nss4.cc.Lehigh.EDU (8.8.8/8.8.5) with ESMTP id XAA317536 for ; Sat, 7 Feb 1998 23:16:58 -0500 Received: from [204.119.15.118] (p4-ip118.polarnet.com [204.119.15.118]) by icefog.polarnet.com (8.8.8/8.8.4) with ESMTP id TAA16574 for ; Sat, 7 Feb 1998 19:16:53 -0900 (AST) Message-Id: Date: Sat, 7 Feb 1998 19:16:53 -0900 (AST) Reply-To: kl7jaf@polarnet.com Sender: owner-qrp-l@Lehigh.EDU Precedence: bulk From: Bruce Hopkins - KL7JAF To: "Low Power Amateur Radio Discussion" Subject: FYBO - Fun !!!! Wasn't sure Ol' Kenwood and I would get to play, what with the El Nino storms boiling through the SF Bay area (and elsewhere). My shack is in the garage, in what turned out to be the only dry corner! Got a good stock of Field Day batteries I keep there for charging and exercising so was able to feed Ol' Kenwood without having live ac in the shack. I used my horizontal loop on the house roof most of the time My operation was a bit disjointed, as it felt like I was set up by a stream. We had so much water in the back yard it came in through the back of the garage. I spent a lot of time with a squeegee escorting it out the front into the driveway. Talk about high humidity. With all the garage doors open and the wind blowing, it was 55F at the operating position. Finally got a sump pump set up in the back yard to pump the water around the house to the front. Seemed to help as the water finally stopped coming in. I know we are lucky and got off light compared to many. Also had to tend the clothes drier through the day. (This is how I explain all the garage time to the xyl). Has a really obnoxious buzzer that tells you when things are dry, so would have to break off contesting until a new load was started. It even QRMs my receiver with its RF hash! When FYBO started I didn't think I would have time to get serious, so just figured on handing out occasional contacts to others. My first log entries aren't complete, as I just recorded the contacts. Well, about the third contact Ol' Kenwood decided this was fun and that I should get serious. So the log entries are more complete after that. We did manage to work several of the Pine Top Expedition members, so they can now deem their efforts a success :-) My log isn't as extensive as last year, but I had fun anyway. 2-7-98 UTC 1702 AB7MY 559/579 AZ GARY 5W temp? 2027 AC6AN 449/559 CA ORI 5W temp? 2032 WE6W 569/579 CA ED 3W 58F 2036 W6PRI 339/459 CA BILL 5W 68F 2040 N7GS 339/449 MT MAL 2W 72F 2042 N7KT 339/559 AZ ROGER 3W 31F Coldest worked 2044 N7XJ 579/459 UT BOB 5W 60F 2046 N7CEE 339/559 AZ SCOTT 900mw 55F 2113 KU7Y 559/599 NV RON 200mw 65F Lowest power worked 2125 KI6DS 569/559 CA DOUG 5W 72F 2129 NC7W 539/559 UT DAVE 5W 72F 2139 K7GT 339/449 CA GRANT 2W 68F 2141 AC6KW 579/599 CA JEFF 5W 60F 2146 KK6MC/5 339/559 NM JIM 5W 69F 2152 KB6FPW 559/599 CA MITCH 4W 65F 2220 WA6NAE 449/559 CA DWIGHT 800mw 52F 2305 W5VBO 549/559 AZ BRIAN 5W 61F 2309 KX7L 539/549 WA CHARLES 5W 56F 2320 WA5WHN/7 449/559 AZ JAY 1W 33F 2331 NQ7RP 339/559 AZ FLOYD 5W 70F 2334 NQ7K 539/559 AZ MIKE 5W 58F 2338 AD6AY 589/599 CA DAVE 2W 52F 2343 W6RCL 559/579 CA ALAN 5W 54F 2346 K6PZB 449/449 CA JOHN 2W 56F 2350 KO6KA 579/589 CA ROB 3W 65F 2351 KN6YD 559/599 CA JEFF 5W 70F 2352 W6JHQ 559/579 CA TOM 600mw 70F 2355 WB7OEM 449/579 WA CHUCK 2W 55F 2-8-98 UTC 0002 AB7TK 559/559 ID RANDY 5W 55F 0004 W6KI 579/599 CA GLEN 2W 60F 0012 N0TU 449/449 CO STEVE 2W 65F 0014 AB7OA 559/559 AZ KENT 5W 56F 0017 KL7IXI/7 559/549 WA MIKE 4W 50F 0020 WD6FDD 449/559 CA RICH 5W 58F 0026 K6RPF 569/579 CA DOUG 5W 57F 0033 AF5Z 339/559 TX BOB 4W 72F 0039 K6PB 579/559 CA PETER 5W 65F 0046 W3CD 339/449 CA BOB 5W 65F Now the NA Sprint QRM gets overwhelming so we QSY to the Novice Band. I hadn't tested my 40m loop until yesterday to see if it was still working correctly. It was resonant somewhere around 51MHz. My 80m dipole was still half in a snow bank, and let's not discuss the vertical. A couple of months ago, I spent a lot of time cleaning up hash from the computer monitor that was around 14.063 and 21.063. I had it so it was barely audible. Now it's louder than before. My first almost FYBO qso was with KL7JAF, but the monitor hash made that a struggle. I never did get Bruce's temp or power and he never got my exchange. He was stronger on the 80m dipole, but he couldn't hear me. I switched to 40m and began getting 339 reports from stations that I'd always gotten at least a 579 from, oops, still on the dipole. Change over to the loop, that's more better but still not getting the type of signal reports I've been used to with that antenna. So now with the equipment problems more or less taken care of the only problem was with the operator. I struggled with almost every contact, if the other station wasn't 599 then I had a problem copying it. One of the first stations I worked was sending around 20wpm, and I asked him to QRS. He slowed down to about 15 wpm I still had problems copying. I just never seemed to get into the flow of the contest. I had a grand total of 52 QSO's for FYBO, which betters my score from last year. And because of my mental attitude, the fun quotient just wasn't there either. I also tried the NA Sprint for the first time. I can see why people find it so much fun. It's a fast and furious pace, including the CW. I spent about an hour just listening and trying to figure it out. I made 4 QSO's in about an hour of actual trying to contact people time, about 2 hours of total on time. Did anyone else notice that there was no RTTY or SSB between 7.030 and 7.050 while the Hi Power Sprinters were there? That sure made 40m a pleasure during that time period. 72 de Rick WZ2T NNY Franklin County srichard@northnet.org ---If you're not part of the solution, You're part of the precipitate.--- Steven Wright From owner-qrp-l@Lehigh.EDU Sun Feb 8 09:51:27 1998 Received: from fidoii.CC.lehigh.EDU (fidoii.CC.lehigh.EDU [128.180.1.4]) by oucsace.cs.ohiou.edu (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id JAA23012 for ; Sun, 8 Feb 1998 09:51:26 -0500 (EST) Received: from Lehigh.EDU ([127.0.0.1]) by fidoii.cc.Lehigh.EDU with SMTP id <12692-52226>; Sun, 8 Feb 1998 09:49:23 -0500 Received: from nss4.cc.Lehigh.EDU ([128.180.1.13]) by fidoii.cc.Lehigh.EDU with ESMTP id <12448-35836>; Sun, 8 Feb 1998 09:48:09 -0500 Received: from w3eax.umd.edu (w3eax.umd.edu [128.8.198.73]) by nss4.cc.Lehigh.EDU (8.8.8/8.8.5) with ESMTP id JAA317646 for ; Sun, 8 Feb 1998 09:47:56 -0500 Received: from localhost (ham@localhost) by w3eax.umd.edu (8.8.5/8.8.5) with SMTP id KAA21958; Sun, 8 Feb 1998 10:44:13 -0500 Message-Id: Date: Sun, 8 Feb 1998 10:44:13 -0500 (EST) Reply-To: ham@w3eax.umd.edu Sender: owner-qrp-l@Lehigh.EDU Precedence: bulk From: "Scott Rosenfeld [NF3I]" To: "Low Power Amateur Radio Discussion" Subject: NF3I/MD-MW FYBO (long but worth it!) Chris N3XRV and I used two of those 32' aluminum masts with 5' PVC sections he'd machined with a Dremel in order to get 'em to fit (ID <> OD, heh heh). Anyway, that was at 9:30 a.m. The setup was only abt 1/2 mile from my house, which was convenient because I had to walk the dogs every six hours or so. SO ANYway, two masts went up. One held the G5RV, and the other held a 66' "director." It didn't NOT work, but I can't promise it really helped that much :) The "station?" The tailgate of Chris' Suburban. We made it on air at 1630z, about 30 mins late. We must have done a good job on the antenna because we could actually hold frequencies for periods of time... well, not as well as WQ0RP could, but it was fun. Running the "full pint" on Chris' IC-735 (and with a few small gel cells that seemingly wouldn't die, even though the 735 draws 4 amps on xmit, and we were calling CQ a lot) we tallied a prelim total of 68 Qs and 34 multipliers. 20 was fair, 40 was pretty good, and 80 completely stunk. Actually, I should clarify that 40 was good UNTIL the NA QSO Party started, and we became invi- sible amongst the 300-foot trees, being small shrubs. Around 9 o'clock, we were pretty cold, and Qs were hard to come by, and Danny had to leave, so we decided to break everything down and pack up a few hours early. The whole clean-up took about 60 minutes, including making sure we didn't leave anything out in the field. We'd had probably a half-dozen non-hams stop by. Special Thanks: To Danny, K3TKS, who brought two pizzas from Domino's. Hailing from NYC, I personally don't much like Domino's BUT it sure as heck tasted good. To Toby, KB3BWR, experiencing his first outdoor operation, who brought a big bag of "Swiss Mix," containing nuts, peanut butter chips, raisins, and M&Ms...that didn't last long. To Skip, KB3BXV, and family. He showed up three times, the last of which was at 11:00 when we'd already packed up, and I was at home warming up... the hot cocoa still served its purpose. To Pat, N3MIT, who graced us with his presence for several hours even though he was really feeling sick. To Scott, N3BYY, who hung out for at least four hrs. with his guide dog sitting patiently in the truck. To Jon, KD3FG, whose beard has grown of late and who couldn't bring his homebrewed shorty 20m 3 element backpack beam because his company had a crisis and he had to put in something like 40 hours this weekend, and somehow managed to swing by for a few minutes anyway. To Nico, KF4UNA, who wacthed and wondered, "why?" To Mike, N3UEZ, for giving us a scare because we didn't expect anyone else to be coming by :) To EVERYONE we worked, FYBO or not, including those folks who said "TEMP? KN" when we asked them for the full exchange...guess they weren't sure what "TEMP" meant...and to hear a call, and we all suddenly shout out "Hey, it's" and fill it in with Ade, or Doc, or Ernie, or Brian, or Mike, or Rich, etc... To all the spouses/SOs of everyone who participated, and didn't really have to ask why people would be going out and doing Field Day in the middle of winter, and putting themselves at a "disadvantage" by running just 5000 mW or less. ...and, most importantly, to the Burtonsville Elks Lodge members, who permitted us (with insurance certification in hand) to use their several-acre back lot just up the street from my home. There were NO other good options available, and we appreciate it greatly. What did we learn? After 10 hours, 36 degrees becomes pretty cold. Layers of clothing help a little. Thinsulate gloves are STILL pretty thick. You CAN send CW with gloves on, albeit not very well. It's hard to write legibly with gloves on. Less than 5 watts works, period. ZUT! The combination of rain, gale force winds, mudslides, and power outages proved this to be a difficult proposition. The charger was off and on all week to get both batteries charged. The original plan was to head for Fremont Peak, a 3000ft peak about 50 miles from home. We, Ron K6EXT and I, had worked the CA QSO party from there and felt it would be a great site for FYBO and some winter camping. As the week progressed and the roads were closed one by one, we realized this would not be possible. A quick call to the local state campground found that all campgrounds in the area had sustained extensive damage and were closed. The ranger wanted my phone number to report me to the local mental institution just for asking. Not to give up easily, we decided that since I live in a rural area with lots of trees, we could camp out here and do field ops from the yard. Mother nature was not on our side. At 15:00, I went outside to figure out how I was going to put up my dipole. The rain was coming down in drops the size of golf balls at a 45 degree angle at 40 MPH! After being pelted for a few minutes by multiple sorties of these freezing cold water bombs, I realized putting up the antenna would prove impossible. I retreated to the shelter of my shack, soaking wet and shivering. A quick change of clothes and I was still cold, but dry. The family would be gone today so I could turn off the heat and not be interrupted. A quick check of the thermometer showed the temperature at 60F, not cold enough. The outside temperature was 47F. I opened the shack window. Flipped on the rig and began my assault at 16:30. After working a few stations, I looked up and found the rain coming in through the opened window. I got up and closed the window, dried a bunch of wet papers and books, and went back to the rig. After putting away the first 16 QSO's in an hour and a half, I decided this was too much fun. That stash of stogies, the bottle of brandy (meant to keep us warm in the cold winter's night), the day off work, having fun, and nobody home, hmmm The temptation was too much and I fired up my Big Butt Perfecto. I couldn't open the window in the shack and had to hope the smoke would clear before the family returned. Back to the contest, stogie in hand. Ron arrived at about 19:15 with his recently completed SST in hand. I took a break and threw the SST on the scope to align the transmitter. 1.4W out, nice clean signal, and crying for a QSO. We popped an antenna on it and pounced on John in Joshua Tree about 400 miles away. He wasn't in the contest, but was QRP and willing to give me the info for the contact (although his temp was a guess). Well that was it, a first QSO calls for a celebration doesn't it? Ron fired up his cigar and in keeping in line with the contest theme we tried to get cold by breaking opened a couple of ICE COLD beers. Back on the air, I continued to work stations on both 20, and 40 meters, until about 24:00, when the NA Sprint stations took over and I could no longer hear any FYBO stations. I am convinced that QRP works, but QRPp? Ron, KU7Y, had a great signal here from NV with only 200mW. The most amazing contact was Tony, AA0SM, with 900mW. His signal was as loud as any 100W signal all the way from MN. The contest was fun as I worked people I knew. It was fun to reply to callers with "GM John UR 559 .." Also, not as serious a contest as some there were even a few Hi Hi's thrown in. My XYL arrived home about 02:00, pizza in hand. If you guys thought you were risking life and limb facing the cold, wet, ice, and wind, try facing your family after smoking cigars in the house all day! I won't be trying that one again ;-). All and all we had a great time. Wish I could have gotten the field multiplier, but it just wasn't to be. Can't wait until next year to try again. -- 73 de Jeff AC6KW grudin@vdbs.com _____________________________________________________________________________ QRP-L #16 Private Practice : Companion Animals and Exotics Norcal QRP #1292 Ocean Animal Clinic / Cat Clinic of Santa Cruz Santa Cruz, California QRP'ers do it with less energy (but lot's of enthusiasm)! _____________________________________________________________________________ From owner-qrp-l@Lehigh.EDU Sun Feb 8 15:53:30 1998 Received: from fidoii.CC.lehigh.EDU (fidoii.CC.lehigh.EDU [128.180.1.4]) by oucsace.cs.ohiou.edu (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id PAA02138 for ; Sun, 8 Feb 1998 15:53:29 -0500 (EST) Received: from Lehigh.EDU ([127.0.0.1]) by fidoii.cc.Lehigh.EDU with SMTP id <12837-35836>; Sun, 8 Feb 1998 15:51:18 -0500 Received: from nss4.cc.Lehigh.EDU ([128.180.1.13]) by fidoii.cc.Lehigh.EDU with ESMTP id <12933-15872>; Sun, 8 Feb 1998 15:46:23 -0500 Received: from sparticus.bright.net (sparticus.bright.net [205.212.123.14]) by nss4.cc.Lehigh.EDU (8.8.8/8.8.5) with ESMTP id PAA522938 for ; Sun, 8 Feb 1998 15:46:15 -0500 Received: from houp09588.hst.moc.com (find3-cs-4.dial.bright.net [205.212.145.167]) by sparticus.bright.net (8.8.7/8.8.7/FNG) with SMTP id PAA12891 for ; Sun, 8 Feb 1998 15:41:54 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: <199802082041.PAA12891@sparticus.bright.net> Date: Sun, 8 Feb 1998 14:45:57 -6 Reply-To: kanga@bright.net Sender: owner-qrp-l@Lehigh.EDU Precedence: bulk From: "Bill Kelsey - N8ET - Kanga US" To: "Low Power Amateur Radio Discussion" Subject: FYBO - N8ET in Texas MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT X-Listprocessor-Version: 8.1 beta -- ListProcessor(tm) by CREN Status: RO As W5FN mentioned in his post earlier, I was (and still am) in Texas this weekend. It looks like I wll be here another week..... Saturday AM I got up early and went to a breakfast meeting of a local club northwest of Houston, and heard a good talk on Sunspots. Then I jumped in the car and headed west to visit W5FN for a couple of hours in FYBO. I arrived after lunch - long after TIm had done the hard work and gotten the antenna and rig set up. He had his "trick" GQ-40 there with a neat new DDS he has disigned and built running the GQ-40. He has also done a mod to the xtal ladder filter so that it is variable bandwidth. The DDX VFO was in an "original homebrew case" - which was actually a cardboard box with the keypad and conrols mounted on one side, and the PC board hanging in the middle. Cardboard must have some sort of EMI shielding property - I could not hear any digiatl noise in the GQ-40..... Highlite of the operation was when Tim gave me a chance to work a few on 20 cw (using a Sierra). Tuned above 14.060 and heard .... L7JA..... and figured it must be KL7JAF, so I listened a bit more and determined it was Bruce calling CQ. It took a couple of calls to get his attention, and about 15 more minutes to convince him I was sending TX in the exchange. When we finished there was quite a pileup! Tim had to get in line to work him, and finally did abotu 45 minutes later. For all you guys "up north", it is much more comfortable operating in February under blue sky and sun at 65 degrees than it is operating in typical Ohio February weather! Tim had actually set up under a tree for the shade! Had a great time - a special thanks to W5FN for letting me drop in and get in a bit of FYBO operating time! 73 - Bill - N8ET Kanga@bright.net www.bright.net/~kanga/kanga/ From owner-qrp-l@Lehigh.EDU Sun Feb 8 17:40:35 1998 Received: from fidoii.CC.lehigh.EDU (fidoii.CC.lehigh.EDU [128.180.1.4]) by oucsace.cs.ohiou.edu (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id RAA04686 for ; Sun, 8 Feb 1998 17:40:33 -0500 (EST) Received: from Lehigh.EDU ([127.0.0.1]) by fidoii.cc.Lehigh.EDU with SMTP id <12735-63486>; Sun, 8 Feb 1998 17:39:56 -0500 Received: from nss4.cc.Lehigh.EDU ([128.180.1.13]) by fidoii.cc.Lehigh.EDU with ESMTP id <12582-35836>; Sun, 8 Feb 1998 17:38:54 -0500 Received: from iserver.dpol.k12.ca.us ([209.76.67.2]) by nss4.cc.Lehigh.EDU (8.8.8/8.8.5) with ESMTP id RAA376640 for ; Sun, 8 Feb 1998 17:38:50 -0500 Received: from Guest.dpol.k12.ca.us (DOUG.dpol.k12.ca.us [10.13.10.99]) by iserver.dpol.k12.ca.us (post.office MTA v1.9.3 ID# 86-13283) with SMTP id AAA311; Sun, 8 Feb 1998 14:33:33 -0800 Message-Id: <3.0.1.32.19980208144410.00cf4e34@dpol.k12.ca.us> Date: Sun, 08 Feb 1998 14:44:10 -0800 Reply-To: ki6ds@dpol.k12.ca.us Sender: owner-qrp-l@Lehigh.EDU Precedence: bulk From: ki6ds@dpol.k12.ca.us (Hendricks, Doug) To: "Low Power Amateur Radio Discussion" Subject: KI6DS FYBO Log Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" X-Cc: vole@primenet.com X-Sender: ki6ds@dpol.k12.ca.us X-Mailer: Windows Eudora Light Version 3.0.1 (32) X-Listprocessor-Version: 8.1 beta -- ListProcessor(tm) by CREN Status: RO What a great contest!! I'm working on posting some pics on the Web, and will post the info as I get it done. We'd hoped to do it "live", but trouble with logging on to my ISP's FTP site prevented that. For myself, I had 21 Q's and 7 SPC's, working in 31 deg weather with snow all morning. I found that I can key with gloves on, but can't write, so the old knuckles got mighty cold. The rest of the AZ/NM crew were in the same boat, but we sure had a great time. With a temp mult of 4, a field mult of 4, and an alt power mult of 2, (if I read the rules right), I ended up with a raw score of 4,704. Not bad, since I was pretty well frozen out by 2150Z and hung it up. Had to start fixing dinner, anyway. Heard but not worked: WQ0RP loud, K0EVZ also loud, but they couldn't hear my three watts. Also heard Ade W0RSP but couldn't get him either. This is the second trip to the field with the SLV/W6MMA setup, and I'm a believer in it. For a portable antenna, I don't think it can be beat. Easy to set up, repeatable tuning settings (I mark the PVC at the "tap" points for each band), and it's got great ears. Rig was an OHR-400, and I was concerned about not having 15 meters until I heard it was poor anyway. No biggy there, :-). Fun in the snow, and came home to heavy rain....can't do yard work, so I'll work on cleaning up the log to send to Joe. With a X 2 multiplier for Battery Power, and a X 2 mult for a lowest operating temperature of 61 F; 82 X 30 X 2 X 2 = 10,040 points Not great, but better than last year's 44 QSOs, but without the low T and field multipliers I got last year. The logs are coming; I promise Joe. I was still recovering from the flu so I stayed home instead of going to the field. I have a battery I operate the TS850AT with so I have the alternative power multiplier. The Shack is in a section of the house with a separate thermostat so I left it off overnite and the T started at 61 F so I got a X2 temperature multiplier for that. I started at 1600 Z and went to 0000Z. Then I did the NA sprint, being a member of one of the QRP teams (I am still not sure how that happened). In my opinion, the NA sprint is the ham radio equivalent of Pamplona's running of the bulls, and certainly no place for a sane person operating QRP at 20 WPM, but that is a story for another time. Breakdown by Band; 40 M 38 20 M 32 15 M 12 10 M 00 I am somewhat surprised by this breakdown, since I usually like to operate the highest band open. 15 M was open from here to the east coast nearly the whole time I operated, and I spent a lot of time calling CQ up there, but I could not get much activity going. AA1IK had a beautiful signal here, but got few replies that I could hear. It is a shame to hear a NH station going begging for contacts with a gorgeous signal and no QRM! And he did tell us he would be there. W1VT also had a nice signal on 15 M, and it sounded like he wasn't getting many replies either. He didn't stay around long though and after hearing him run stations on 20 M I am not surprised. Given the sunspot count, I would guess that there would have been nice openings from the west coast to all of the east coast on 15 M, but I didn't hear much, if any activity of that sort. I think that people are missing a good QSO/SPC producing band by not operating 15 M. If you don't have a QRP rig, use a regular rig with the power turned down. No DigiQRM either. In one of the more hilarious (ironic) moments of the contest, W3PP responded to my "CQ test" on 21.060. He was in Delaware, another rare SPC, and was participating in the Delaware QSO party. We exchanged appropriate information for each other's contest. His power exchange was One kW!! After the QSO, he gracefully moved off my frequency up to 21.060.5 and started calling CQ Test! His S9 + 30 db signal made QRP work difficult, none the less, he was a rare SPC going begging for contacts. With his 30 db over 9 signal a 1 W QRP signal would have been S9 here if they had been on. I checked 10 M on and off, and called CQ several times on 28.060. I didn't hear anything, although late in the afternoon I did hear a two CW stations from South America further down the band. No FYBO activity though. I checked 14.285 for any QRP SSB activity, but heard none. I suppose the large number of 40 M contacts was a result of my conscious effort to work as many of the AZ bunch as possible, which I did at 13, including all of the NM visiting Professors, WA5WHN, W5BI, NA5N, and K5OI; all stroke 7. I got Tim with about 10 minutes left. The band went long about 2330 and I worked AA1IK in NH again among others! I had to convince him that dupes were OK in different bands. The table was turned as the very next QSO was with somebody I had on my dupe sheet on 40M, so I told him B4, but he told me it was OK. I need to dupe the logs again, I have trouble keeping up dupe sheets anyway, but with one for each band it is a major chore for me. Next year-computer logging. Among notable contacts were the two QRP club stations, NQ7RP and NQ0RP; and W0RSP in SD. I wasn't the only NM station on, Tom, WB5QYT, was on and had a nice signal here. Why is this significant? Well Tom and I were only about 10 miles apart, but there is a 10,000 foot mountain range between, and 5 miles of granite and limestone between us. NVIS works. I had a great time, and probably feel better today as a result of not going to the field. I still want to try that site for a field operation, it looks like it should be a winner. Oh yeah, the antenna is my 30 M delta loop at 35 Ft fed with ladder line for multiband use. The QTH is at about 7000 ft asl with clear horizons from the N to the SW. See you next year. With the solar activity on the rise, 15M will be very important. Get set for it now. - Duffey KK6MC/5 James R. The rig uses RCA jacks for power and keying and I don't have those. What I do have is clip leads. Lots of them, everywhere! For some reason all I could get was about 10 milliwatts. Spent 20 minutes adjusting toroid coil spacing, inductor cans, even reading the manual to no avail. Anyway the reciever was great! I could hear everyone all at once, great dynamic range and audio. More on that later. While changing back to the dummy load fron the antenna I see it. The little knob on my WM-1 is on the reverse setting. A twist of the wrist gives me THREE WATTS and I'm on my way. Those know me here know that I'm whats called, in polite circles, a "casual" operater. Translated that means that I can't copy cw if I can hear more than one signal at a time. With the tenTec you can hear all of the signals, small and large, in it's generous pass band at the same time. Great for a good Op. but a little tough for me. AB7TT had brought his ZM-2 to the table, with a problem. With NQ7K's good hand -eye coordination, he had located the problem. It was a problem that W5BI had put so bluntly. AB7TT has a shorted shaft, =8-0 , in his ZM-2. W5BI had his tool box with him, and NQ7K had proceeded to ream a larger hole for one of the variable capacitors. After NQ7K had reamed the shaft hole a bit larger, the short had disappeared {ZM-2}. A little electrical tape, a larger hole & AB7TT was in business. Needless to say, this was a subject of much laughter & conversation. We had discussed some upcoming projects. Hint: When N7KT posts the photos, for FYBO '98, you may accidently see a photo of one of the future projects. ;-) Next morning; N5ZGT & His Dad, W5BI & I head for Morgan Mountain Fire Road. Our site was at the following location, according to 2 Garmin 12XL GPS receivers; Latitude 34 degrees 11.755 minutes north Longitude 109 degrees 51.889 minutes west elevation: 7,387 feet asl {off of the Morgan Mtn fire road} 60+ feet ponderosa pines, dense forest, .5" of fresh snow on the ground. The 3 of us had set up within 200 feet of each other. N5ZGT had decided to operate out of the back seat of His Dad's Land Cruiser. Brian will describe what he was using later in a note. W5BI was set up in the cab of his 4WD S-10 pick up {windows down}, using his IC-706 set to 5 watts into a hustler mobile antenna. I was set up under some ponderosa pines trees with a G5RV up 35 feet. First lesson: Never use a MFJ 259 SWR analyzer while everyone else is trying to work stations. It sure does radiate all over the place in close proximity. Second lesson: Never purchase .39 {US} per roll, nylon string. There is a reason why it is only .39 per roll. Yes, my G5RV had come down, while the ponderosa pines were swaying in the 10+ mph winds. In fact, it had come down while I was working KI6DS. Third lesson: those rigs with NE602's on the front end, are easily overloaded with just a few microwatts of radiated energy. Fourth lesson: never send faster than 12 wpm with gloves/mittens on, even thin ones. The weather; well, it's FYBO, we were snowed on, the temperature had dipped to 31 deg. F to a high of 36 deg. F. I had tossed a rain parka over the radio gear. {N7KT has photos}. I was dressed for this type of climate, and was quite snug & warm. Down right balmy @ 33 deg. F. AB7TT was further up in altitude, but You will have to read Joe's report, on how he defended his station from the attacking snow boarders & skiers. Heard KL7JAF, but he did not hear me. :-( I was running a Sierra set @ 1 watt. N7CEE @ 900 milliwatts, nice signal. Several S-9 signals, until the NA Sprint & FOC contests had clobbered us on 20 meters. So we had tuned up on the 40 meters band. Where were the Novice/Techs ? We were really enjoying ourselves. I had talked to several stations that were 599. Solid pipeline into Calif., Colorado, New Mexico, Texas & Utah. Great working the home crowd {KK6MC/5, WB5QYT}. I had switched to the QRP Plus @ 1 watt, since I had wanted to play with both xcvrs. I think I have 28 Q's, and 3 long QSOs @ 31 deg. F & 1 watt. We did not operate the entire period, simply because we had wanted to get off of the mountain before dark. As NA5N had told us "We did not break 100 Q's because of El Nino." :-) A Navajo County Sheriff had visited us. He had spotted our tracks off of the road, in the snow. He was just checking to see if we were OK. He nearly got stuck in a snow bank. Saturday night {Feb. 7th}, we had all met back @ N7KT's In_Law's place for beans, chili, tamales, barbeque ribs {all the way from Albuquerque, courtesy of N5ZGT & his Dad}, plus chocolate ice scream {We did, so W5BI & N5ZGT had departed to pick some up}. AB7TT had showed back up around 7:50 PM. 6 layers of clothes Joe ? Again, You will have to hear the stories of the snow boarders & skiers that Joe had harassed. ;-) The Pinetop, Az. crew were spread out over a 30 miles area. We had maintained contact, with each other, on 146.46 MHz FM simplex. Sunday morning, we {except for N7KT} at met in Show Low, Az. @ the Denny's restaurant for breakfast. These Az. scQRPions are really very nice People. We had departed and W5BI & I were working stations in the NH QSO party on 15 & 20 meters SSB mobile. 5/9+ {80 watts into a Hustler bumper mounted mobile antenna}, plus several QSOs later, we were back home. Would we do this again ? Heck yes !! Don't forget the NorCal QRPTTF '98 in April. Are You running for the borders ? http://www.swcp.com/~n5zgt/n4c/ {If You are using AOL & Explorer, one of the photos may look wrong, it's being fixed.} My thanks to the Az. scQRPions for allowing us to cross the border, and enjoy each other's company and thanks to all of You who made this a very pleasurable experience. 72...Jay, WA5WHN DM65qd Albuquerque, NM PS Guess where we are going for next year's FYBO ? Thanks Joe, and the sQRPions, for a fantastic event. This was the first trial for my GM 20 and Okie special vertical( single band wire supported by the famous black fishing pole). The antenna worked out much better than expected, even got Bruce in Ak. and Ron in Nv, with his mighty 200mw. The temp was 27F when I set up, but by the start time it had warmed up to 37F. Not bad at all! High for the day was 57F, with sun, sun, sun. I was on the banks of my pond, and had the company of a horse, donkey, and three ducks. They didn't try to talk all day, so they were good company. Around noon, Bill N5LU, came out to check on me and take me to town for lunch. He still can't quite figure us all out ;-) That made for a nice break, and time to remove some clothes. I didn't set any records, but definitely had loads of fun. I made 35 contacts, with 19 S/P/C. Not too bad for the first run with this set up. This will also be my site for the border operation in April, the border of dry land and pond water, ha! I headed to Pinacle State Park for my FYBO attempt. It is at 550m above sea level and is pretty uninhabited in the winter after deer season. The day was sunny, not a cloud in the sky, and 42 degrees. I knew I was going to have fun, when my first toss of the line weight went over the limb that I chose 50' up. The other end was tied to the backstop of the baseball diamond. I was on the air at noon local time, about an hour late. Met a couple of ice fisherman and a pair of grouse hunters since they were curious about what I was doing. I operated from the tailgate of the truck till the sun began to set. Then I moved into the truck to stay a bit warmer. The temp dropped from 42 degrees to 30 degrees during an hour long QSO. Final temperature was 22 degrees inside the truck. It was 18 degrees out where the antenna was. I could have opened up the shell and got that x6 multiplier, hindsight is a bummer. I broke down and left about an hour early (2200 local) because I was tired and had a headache from not enough water and was making stupid mistakes and because the rules said to have fun and I wasn't anymore. I had only 7 contacts, several on 80m, and 6 new states for me. Only one "official" FYBO contact with another FYBO'er. We're from the 7,000 ft. snow country (Flagstaff, AZ), so we thought we'd do the opposite from the Pinetop gang and head downhill to warmer country for the test. The sun was out and temps ran in the 50's most of the day. With the huge sycamores to hang the wire from, and the bubbling creek nearby, what more could we ask? Using a Sierra and a WM-2 wattmeter, we ran 900mw to a 270 ft end-fed wire. Out of 45 contacts, 22 were on 40m, 15 on 20m, and 8 on 15m. 15 seemed quiet at first but a dozen or so CQ's starting getting responses. Scott did most of the operating and I did the logging, but my rusty cw is starting to come back- I could copy most of the contacts myself. I use a Hewlett-Packard HP100 with N6TR version 4.05 for logging- a QRPer's computer that works well and doesn't drain the station battery. Thanks to everyone who dug our little whistle out of the noise, especially after the big 'test started at 00Z. Made 4 Qs in first 1.5 hours and wasn't having any fun so called it a day. 20CW 08/02/98 01:19 1 AA4S 70 RON Nc Nc 1 20CW 08/02/98 01:21 2 WA3HAE 54 KEN Pa Pa 1 20CW 08/02/98 01:32 3 ND8L 26 RAY Oh Oh 1 20CW 08/02/98 01:35 4 K3CR 44 JIM Pa 1 Sorry Ron to let the Warriors down, hope the rest did much better. 73 Floyd NQ7X Phoenix ScQRPion DM33uq QRP-L 343 ARRL AMSAT ARCI G-QRP NORCAL DX WRKD HF=324 SAT=101 QRP=108 From owner-qrp-l@Lehigh.EDU Mon Feb 9 15:35:29 1998 Received: from fidoii.CC.lehigh.EDU (fidoii.CC.lehigh.EDU [128.180.1.4]) by oucsace.cs.ohiou.edu (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id PAA08039 for ; Mon, 9 Feb 1998 15:35:27 -0500 (EST) Received: from Lehigh.EDU ([127.0.0.1]) by fidoii.cc.Lehigh.EDU with SMTP id <12578-42524>; Mon, 9 Feb 1998 15:34:44 -0500 Received: from nss4.cc.Lehigh.EDU ([128.180.1.13]) by fidoii.cc.Lehigh.EDU with ESMTP id <12530-26400>; Mon, 9 Feb 1998 15:34:04 -0500 Received: from mail1.one.net (0@mail.one.net [206.112.192.107]) by nss4.cc.Lehigh.EDU (8.8.8/8.8.5) with ESMTP id PAA48230 for ; Mon, 9 Feb 1998 15:33:55 -0500 Received: from port-31-28.access.one.net ([206.112.210.186] HELO mpna1 ident: IDENT-NOT-QUERIED [port 24068]) by mail.one.net with SMTP id <12689-5747>; Mon, 9 Feb 1998 15:33:51 -0500 Message-Id: <1.5.4.32.19980209214139.0068cacc@smtp.mpna.com> Date: Mon, 09 Feb 1998 16:41:39 -0500 Reply-To: ripowell@mpna.com Sender: owner-qrp-l@Lehigh.EDU Precedence: bulk From: Richard Powell To: "Low Power Amateur Radio Discussion" Subject: WB6JBM Final FYBO Report (Long) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" X-Sender: ripowell@smtp.mpna.com X-Mailer: Windows Eudora Light Version 1.5.4 (32) X-Listprocessor-Version: 8.1 beta -- ListProcessor(tm) by CREN Status: RO FYBO98 Summary Location: Winton Woods State Park, OH. Smaller Coax!!!! J-Pole is too heavy, replace with ground plane 20M Dipole is too big & heavy - build smaller Bubba Box needs wheels Need a switch on the pole light Use pre-packaged coffee filter thingy's, grounds don't work. Bring Coffee Creamer Smaller Coax!!!! Reduce size of cables for High I 12V light - 12Ga too big Need some method of power cable connectors one top of the battery box Get more of those really expensive tent stakes, they are nice! Install a second hanging line in the tent, 90 degrees off the first one. Bring some clothespins Smaller Coax!!!! Plan for either 2M or Cellular ops, not both. (note: local 2M is annoying) More than 2 antenna weights. Both stuck in tree, glad I had the golf balls! 80M is much easier with a smaller radio 80M is much easier when I have half an idea as to what freq i'm on Smaller Coax!!!! Propane heater worked GREAT!, but throttled down too early saturday night. Start heater later, and run it at a higher setting. Gotta get a real antenna tuner/SWR meter combo Reducing the power on the 9020 was great! didn't make a bit of difference! Never take the Argonaut into the field again. too delicate. 80M antenna took only 20 min to tune Must use something other than RG-8/U! Set up Bubba Box in it's normal position. NOT under the window. Need more operating time on 80M if I'm going to be effective there. Some kind of chair in tent will help a LOT Mummy bags worked good Need to bring extra socks, one pair per day at least (P.U.!) Use computer logging as long as plenty of power is available. Why did I stop????? got frustrated with Argonaut, that's why. Really big tarp is just too big, unless it's activly precipitating. Breaking camp took from 0930L to 1015L - Much better! Bright sunny skies, no wind and mild temps. When I started out to our site at 7:30 am the temp was 12 deg. If we can just stay below 20 deg at the 10:00 start time we can claim the big mult. At 9:00am we were at 17 deg..... this was going to be close. Well no such luck, we were at 22 deg when the gun went off starting FYBO. > >Our site was at the Minnetonka Community Center, we set up next to a frozen pond with our only shelter being a tent canopy, truly a FD site, but without the bugs (just afew Benchers). With no tall trees for wire antennas we put up a R7 vertical for 10-40 meters, and a 80 meter mobile antenna. Rigs were a FT-900, and a IC-706. Logging was done on a laptop. We had a good turnout, having a club meeting that afternoon helped I'm sure. Like I said the WX was perfect, we even broke the 40 deg mark. A slight breeze came up in the afternoon and 40 deg seemed plenty chilly. As soon as the sun started going down so did the temps., it cools off fast on those cold clear nights. Things really slowed down as far as our QSO rate so now came the big question, do we pull up stakes and head home or stick it out for the below 20 deg mult? I didn't take long to decide to go for the "cold". Finally just after 0100Z we were at 18 deg, now get a qso and go home......we sat there on 80 meters for 25 minutes calling CQ,..... and calling CQ, tuning around for any other FYBO'r, noththing! Finally K8ZAA (thank you Randy) called and was in the log, we even got one more a few minutes later and that was enough. > Final "numb"ers 123 Q's, 37 SPC, field-alt-temp mults = 218,448 Total points. I don't want to start listing names in our group, I'll just miss too many, but heros weren't the ones behind the key, we were well feed and equipped. It just one of those days were everything worked and mother nature was on our side. We took lots of photo's, hope to get some on our web site soon. Our site was at the following location: Latitude 34 degrees 11.755 minutes north Longitude 109 degrees 51.889 minutes west Elevation: 7,387 feet asl We were a few hundred feet away from Jay and Gary. There was a little snow on the ground and flurries came down most of the day. I operated from my dad's Montero with an MFJ-9020 and a 20 meter dipole up around 30-35 feet in the Ponderosa pines. Output power was 4 watts. It was a struggle fighting with my dad to keep the car cold for the multiplier. My lowest temp was 34 degrees, but after a little compromising we decided to keep the inside at around 50 degrees (I cracked a window and opened the door a little bit though) :-) A few hours into the contest I started hearing this terrible noise coming from my rig, and it seemed to be all over the band! I soon found out that Jay and Gary were playing with their MFJ-259 antenna analyzer not knowing I was trying to rack up some points! OK...time to read my latest Air & Space magazine. Finally it went off, and I continued. We left just before sunset so we could be out of the mountains before it got too dark. I ended up with 22 Qs, 12 S/P/Cs, the Field multiplier (x4), the Alternative power multiplier (x2) and a temp multiplier of x4. This gave my a score of 8,448 points! Not bad considering I was only on 20 meters. This was the first CW contest I've been on where I have actually been able to listen to a whole bunch of CW signals and be able to copy just one without being confused. Looks like I'll have to do more! That evening we went back to N7KT's In-Law's cabin for Mexican food and BBQ ribs! Gary W5BI and I decided to sneak out and buy ice cream for dessert. It didn't last too long once everybody else found it. After telling our lies and other stories, everybody headed back to their places for some sleep. The next morning the AZ-NM QRP group met at Denny's in Show Low for a great breakfast. Then it was time to head home. This was a great event and I hope to do it again very soon! Pictures of our group can be found on Roger Hightower's homepage at: http://home.earthlink.net/~n7kt Don't forget about Special Event Station N4C, which will be on the air from Four Corners - the only point in the US where four States share a common boundary! 'Course with 80% of all AZ-NM QRPers converging in a small mountain town, I suppose that was a given. :-) It's been great reading all the FYBO reports! Darn glad to hear everyone had a good time, whether you were warm and worked 10 Q's or fighting off ice weasels while bagging 80 Q's. Even better to hear all the field ops got home safe! We ScQRPions sponsor FYBO, but it's all of you folks who actually make it happen. Thanks much for making it a fun one! Clan Gervais decided to turn this whole adventure into a family vacation. With plenty of cold wx gear packed up and ready, we spent 4 days playing in the snow, hanging out with fellow QRPers, and even getting on the air a bit. :) THE PILGRIMAGE TO PINETOP ------------------------- Thursday afternoon we loaded the family-mobile and headed for Pinetop, AZ. Bring our first time there (we usually go to Flagstaff for snow) we weren't sure what to expect. Turned out to be very nice! We opted to stay at the Timber Lodge Motel instead of taking up Roger (N7KT) on his gracious offer to put us all up at his inlaw's mountain QTH. When you've got a herd of rugrats, you tend to play it safe with your friends' sanity. Well, what little there may be to begin with. :) After a little snowtime with the kids, Clan Gervais headed to dinner while I nervously watched the clock. Duffey (KK6MC/5) the NM Fox was on the air - argh! But this was a family vacation, so Foxes came second. (Argh! :-) ) But that's a story for another post.... Friday morning we loaded up the kidlettes and visited the local ranger station for hints on good sledding spots for the family. Struck gold! Brochures, maps, you name it. Off we went. Figured I could scout out a good FYBO site along the way. Our destination was a recreational area just a mile or so east of Sunrise ski resort, 30 miles east of Pinetop. Found it without a hitch, and again struck gold - not only was it a great sledding spot, it was a *perfect* FYBO site! At 9000 ft, the little hill had great views from NW to NE to SE. Large stands of trees protected the spot from the sustained 30-40 kt winds that swept the valley all weekend, and the wx would be plenty cold! Plus I could take breaks and play with the kids. Spent the day sledding, building snow forts, tossing snowballs, all that good stuff. This was the first time the rugrats had been to the snow, and it's safe to say we'll be spending alot of time up there next year. They were having a blast! (Generally at my expense - man, those little buggers have good throwing arms on 'em!) Finally headed back to town to get some garlic bread for the AZ-NM QRP FoodFest at Chez Hightower. THE FEAST --------- Made it over to Chez Hightower as the sun went down. You've all heard the names/calls by now - it was a ton of fun! Dinner was great! The huge vat of HB spaghetti sauce (w/ lots of meat/sausage) was good enough to eat by itself (which I did ;-) ). I'd brought my ZM-2, which had decided to cop an attitude with me after working great for the first day. Figured with all those AZ-NM QRPers there, miracles would occur. Sure enough. And I learned alot too. As we traced/compared against W5VBO's ZM-1, NQ7X's modified ZM-2, and AB7OA's HB ZM-2-like tuner, we slowly zeroed in on the problem. Seems that when pulling off a desoldered crimped lead from C1, I'd managed to nudge the cap *just enough* to short to the panel. A few minutes of reaming and it was all happy again. Thanks guys!!! 'Course they're catching on to me - Mike (NQ7K) pointed out that every time we all get together, I just happen to bring along a piece of gear that needs fixing.... ;-) Paul (NA5N) was showing off a really neat little project. Guaranteed to be first on my shopping list when it's ready! The food was great, as was the company, but we had to get the kids to bed, so we grudgingly headed back to the motel. THE BIG DAY ----------- Dawn came cold and early. My dear sweet ever-suffering wife loaded the kids into the car while I inventoried my FYBO gear one last time. The plan was for them to drop me off in the wilderness and return at 7:30pm that evening to pick up what was left of me. :-) If the wind-driven snowy wx calmed down, they'd stop by in the afternoon to do some sledding, but otherwise I was on my own 'til pickup time. Just me and whatever Nature decided to throw at me for the next 10+ hours on a 9000' hill. No retreat. FYBO indeed. :) When they dropped me off, it was dark, windy as heck, snowing, and isolated. The Fun Meter(tm) was pegged. :-) I'd brought two 40m lengths of wire w/ counterpoises, but only managed to get one up, running NW-SE. Was just too darn cold to do a fast job, plus the hungry trees had eaten up my fly-fishing line while putting up the first antler. ARGH! Without a longwire to the NE, I didn't have much hope of working across the Mississippi. Next time the NE-SW wire goes up first. By the time I'd gotten on the air (late - 1700Z) the temp had risen to a balmy 30F. All my gear was wrapped up with a heavy-duty "space blanket" to keep the moisture out and catch some rays to keep it all warm. Only my knee-key and earphone cables stuck out from the odd-looking Space Burrito sitting next to me. Tuned up with the ZM-2 and off I went! Started on 15m but couldn't hear anyone and couldn't raise anyone with my CQ's, so headed down to 20m and started working folks there. Then down to 40m for a few hours, back up to 20m, etc. Lots of fun! Bands felt very mushy, but my 130+ ft. wire was picking up sigs in AK (non-FYBO :-( ) and some DX I didn't recognize. Just couldn't break that Mississippi RF Wall. I did manage to hear N4ROA answering a CQ, so I QSY'd up a bit and called CQ, hoping to nab him. No joy. Worked plenty of CA/AZ/NM/WA folks throughout the day, plus started working the midwest towards the afternoon. Even worked a few of the MN QRP FYBO team. Nice cold temps up there, guys! Plus worked fellow AB7*T* Critter Randy (AB7TK) as well as good ol' Abe in SD. Spent another 30 minutes on 15m, but no action. Sounded open though. Every QSO was lots of fun! Folks seemed light-hearted and having a good time, freezing or not. Worked several calls for the first time too - glad to see you new contesters out there! Also fun to work all those milliwatters too. Nice sounding sigs! The WX was great - cloudy enough to keep the snow glare to a minimum, but sunny enough to get the temps all the way up to the high 30's. Just sat back in my little insulated backpacking chair, working Q's and watching the crowds slowly grow on the sledding hill. Got plenty of odd looks from folks walking by. Finally had to start explaining what I was doing, but the truth was apparently stranger than the fiction they'd been postulating, 'cause I got even more odd looks once they knew what I was actually up to. :-) Even unplugged my headphones for one little kid so he could hear the "beeps". Brought a smile to his little face. Maybe I planted the ham virus in him. ;-) Just when it sounded like 20m was opening to the east, the family came tromping up the hill. Now how the heck can you turn down a bunch of rambunctious rugrats with sled and smiles in hand? Had to pass on the eastern Q's and play sled driver/snowball target for a few hours. They headed back for warmth at around 2300Z, I headed back to my FYBO HQ to brave out the last sevearl hours. The temp started dropping with the sun, and within minutes had dropped to a FYBO- loving 23F - wahoo! Slowly, ever so slowly, the temp crept down. That juicy "Below 20F" x6 multi was soon to be mine! 22F... 21F... 20.8F... 20.6F... 20.4F... 20.9F... 21F... Hey... ARGH! Much to my horror, the cloud cover had built back up and the temp slowly climbed all the way back up to 23F and stubbornly stayed put. CRUEL NATURE, WHY MUST YOU MOCK ME SO?!? Fleetingly I thought of shoving the thermo-probe into the snow, but that would've actually *warmed* it up. I was doomed. So close yet so far. That elusive x6 multi would slip from my grasp yet another year.... But my snowcamping clothes were working beautifully. I was warm and toasty the entire day/night. Only my exposed fingertips were the least bit chilled. The NA Sprint started in earnest. First it was just the buzzing of a lone S9+30dB sig, but soon 20m was a hornet's nest of 45wpm KWatt sigs. I retreated to 7040, only to find WE6W bravely defending a few hundred Hz of space between more KW hornets. We made the exchange (no worse than the usual Fox Hunt QRM ;-) ) and I QSY'd to the 40m Novice segment. Called CQ. Called and called. Picked up two FYBO-ers in an hour. Slim pickings. Heard one hearty FYBO op calling CQ near 7138, but he disappeared under a tidalwave of that foreign BC "Chinese Funeral Music". Hoped I'd catch him QSY, but no luck. QSY'd to 80m. Sounded open, but no FYBO ops. Couldn't flush any out either. Finished up on 40m Novice, then started breaking camp for my scheduled pickup/rescue. THE RESCUE/PARADISE ON A PLATE ------------------------------ My wife smiled at me with that understanding look that says, "You're an absolute nut, but for some wierd reason I love you anyway." As pleasant as the solitude of a nighttime snowfield had been, it was good to be back. We drove to Chez Hightower/ FYBO HQ to check in with the gang. Unfortunately the kids had all fallen asleep in the car! I was only able to chat for a little bit before we had to get to the kids back to the motel, but the AZ-NM crew generously loaded us up with a huge stack of best BBQ ribs this side of anywhere, some tasty tamales, and a pile of some yummy mini-chimichanga-like thingies to take back with us. Everyone had gotten back safely and war stories were being busily exchanged. SO LONG AND THANKS FOR THE FRENCH TOAST --------------------------------------- We'd agreed to meet at Denny's for breakfast the next morning. Kind of a nice way to say goodbye before we all scattered to the winds. More lies were told, bacon pilfered, silverware palmed, pictures taken, smiles exchanged - all the stuff we've come to expect from a gathering of the AZ-NM Crew. :-) I sure wish we'd had more time to hang out with everyone. Kinda tough with all the kidlettes to take care of, but hopefully next year we'll do better. But, at the risk of sounding immodest, I must confess that you'll not find a nicer bunch of folks than the AZ-NM Crew at Pinetop. 'Course we missed the folks who couldn't make it this year. Maybe next time.... After breakfast, Clan Gervais headed to the sledding hill one last time. Spent an hour or so testing gravity before loading up for the final trip home. FYBO PARTING GIFT ----------------- The drive back to Phoenix was grey and wet wet wet. But at least I didn't have to wash the car when we got home. :) As we pulled up to the house, we noticed a large box near the front door. Hey! It was the snowshoes I'd ordered from REI! One last little touch of FYBO. And I already know how I can use 'em to good effect for FYBO '99.... Final tally: 41 Q's, about 11 SPCs, x2 (batt), x4 (field), x5 (20F). Somewhere around 18,000 points and tons of fun. Thanks again to all who joined in the adventure, whether you were in the field, an unheated garage, or snug next to the fire. Sure hope you had a good, safe time and came back with some amusing stories/lies for friends and family. :-) Cheers de AB7TT and the rest of the ScQRPions, -Joe, vole@primenet.com, AZ ScQRPions (Phoenix) "If it ain't fun, you ain't doin' it right!" -The AZ ScQRPions From owner-qrp-l@Lehigh.EDU Tue Feb 10 20:44:52 1998 Received: from fidoii.CC.lehigh.EDU (fidoii.CC.lehigh.EDU [128.180.1.4]) by oucsace.cs.ohiou.edu (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id UAA16742 for ; Tue, 10 Feb 1998 20:44:51 -0500 (EST) Received: from Lehigh.EDU ([127.0.0.1]) by fidoii.cc.Lehigh.EDU with SMTP id <12823-65730>; Tue, 10 Feb 1998 20:44:28 -0500 Received: from nss4.cc.Lehigh.EDU ([128.180.1.13]) by fidoii.cc.Lehigh.EDU with ESMTP id <12512-65730>; Tue, 10 Feb 1998 20:43:14 -0500 Received: from mail.utexas.edu (mail.utexas.edu [128.83.126.1]) by nss4.cc.Lehigh.EDU (8.8.8/8.8.5) with SMTP id UAA61046 for ; Tue, 10 Feb 1998 20:43:01 -0500 Received: (qmail 3416 invoked by uid 0); 11 Feb 1998 01:42:28 -0000 Received: from dial-91-7.ots.utexas.edu (HELO default) (128.83.249.7) by mail.utexas.edu with SMTP; 11 Feb 1998 01:42:28 -0000 Message-Id: <3.0.1.32.19980210194111.00690448@mail.utexas.edu> Date: Tue, 10 Feb 1998 19:41:11 -0600 Reply-To: bhowell@mail.utexas.edu Sender: owner-qrp-l@Lehigh.EDU Precedence: bulk From: Bill Howell To: "Low Power Amateur Radio Discussion" Subject: FYBO Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" X-Sender: bhowell@mail.utexas.edu X-Mailer: Windows Eudora Light Version 3.0.1 (32) X-Listprocessor-Version: 8.1 beta -- ListProcessor(tm) by CREN Status: RO I managed 13 contacts during FYBO. Last year I worked the FYBO from the home qth. This was a lot more fun. Had to work for awhile on Friday but drove on up to Paul's (NA5N) place in Socorro and we drove over to AZ with a stop at a famous cafe in Datil, NM. We got into Pinetop about sunset, checked into the motel, and then went hunting for Roger and Bob Hightower's place. Paul's GPS worked great except he had the wrong long/lat entered in and we shot past our destination. Using 146.46 simplex we got talked in post haste. Had a wonderful spaghetti dinner and got to meet the AZ ScQRPions/NM QRP mafia. Paul and I were up at dawn (well, not quite) and went out for breakfast at the Pinetop Cafe. Went back to the motel and got stuff set up in the falling snow outside the motel amongst the tall cool pine trees. Had a couple of tables and chairs about 100 feet apart. Paul set up his SLV and his "shack in a box" MFJ rig. I hauled in big trolling motor battery (slight overkill but it's what I had) and hooked up the QRP+ to a Hamstick on 20m on top of Paul's new Bravada (nice car guy!). Had some pretty good snow showers mixed with rain. Took us several hours of getting wet and cold (around 33F) to figure out that we could move the tables and chairs underneath some overhangs and stay protected from the precipitation. All that wet seemed to short out my paddles. Guess dropping one and stepping on it didn't have anything to do with it. We were both pretty well dressed. The only thing that got cold on us was our toes and finger tips. I won't say that I caught Paul on his bed, with his boots pulled off, cutting some z's, taking a needed break from the cold. And I won't say I did the same thing a couple of times, there are advantages to being within walking distance of civilization! I have to say that I was disappointed when I worked some of the nearby ScQRPions when they reported a temperature of 60F! (Wimps) Quit around 6 pm local (0000z) and broke everything down. Went back to the Hightower's for some great Mexican food and great comraderie. Hey, these QRPers are some fun guys. Had breakfast with most of them Sunday morning at Denny's and then we headed out to return to NM. I worked 32 stations, 18 s/p/c, field location, alternative power, and 33F temperature. I figure: 32 x 18 x 4 x 2 x 4 = 18,432. I'll let Paul tell you his side of the story. I will say that I wasn't responsible for his missing log staying missing but I did lose it the first time. I believe it was Paul that suggested changing FYBO to BYBO and move it to locations like Death Valley, or White Sands Missile Range in July! You figure out what the first B stands for? This was one event not to be missed this year so a little planning went into the preparation. Nick and I emptied just about every carrying bag that I own and sorted through all the equipment that might be neded for a wilderness Dxpedition. It was also decided (by me) that we would carry only as much as Nick could put on his back. He then figured that the samller the backpack, the less he would have to carry. I assembled all the gear, QRP+, bencher paddles, companion battery and tuner, clock, gusher dipole, sling shot (his favorite), fishing line, pull string etc. It all fit into one backpack. Just for practice he carried a SLV in a noodle case. Nice day with the temp about 44 F, calm wind and bright skies. No problem so we drove down to the State Park and walked out to the picnic grove. The Gusher antenna, thanks Joe N2CX for the design, went up without a snag. Inverted V aimed east/west to get the New England area. All started out fine but it took so getting used to the ambient noise. Cars going over the wooden bridge sounded like they were headed for the river, jets coming into Newark airport were up about 500 ft, 500 Canada geese walking and fighting in the river, Nick snapping branches as he crashed over the river bank just to mention a few. Then the cw speed sounded like 60 wpm or better. It only took a few minutes to get settled in and the contacts added up. Then I realized my fingers were getting cold and the paddles were very cold. Two hours of sitting on a cold bench yielded a frozen hand. I had to run (creek) back to the truck where I forgot my gloves. I did hold out as long as possible but it was either fold up the station or cheat. I got back to the rig and kept on going for a few more hours. Very nice day, nice weather for Feb and I learned alot about field operating. Nick say we can carry less equipment next time. Thanks for all the contacts and did manage a new state, NH. Dissapointing that the skip was so short but it was nice to hear the locals. Lets get set for next year and maybe a new mult for the temp. I couldn't get it to go down 1 degree to 39F. maybe with the windchill but no bananna!! The Albuquerque bunch left Jay's WA5WHN house (35d 07.8 106d 38.5W) about the same time, all arriving at the FYBO HQ cabin (34d 06.1 109d 53.7W) around dinner time. We all split up saturday morning for FYBO to separate ourselves as much as possible, with Tim K5OI and I operating in the tall pines behind our motel (34d 07.7 109d 56.5W, 7415 feet elev.) in Pine Top. We knew the day had promise when it started snowing while we were eating breakfast (sorry, forgot to pull a GPS fix from the restaurant booth!). The temp hung around 32-37 all day, enough to turn the snow into rain, then back to snow, and so forth. My 40M station used the SLV with the W6MMA coil and radials. The soggy, muddy ground was sucking the RF out of it I think. My SLV grew up in the desert and just didn't know what to do in mushy ground, snow and soggy pine needles. Tim K5OI set up his QRP+ station/ham stick on 20M and it worked well once we got smart and learned to get out of the rain a bit. There were a million (well, few hundred) pine trees back there with snow ... that kept dripping on everything. I mean running QSO's with blobs of water on the paddles trying to get the exchange out. A different experience for this old desert ratt. Since I haven't seen my log book since saturday night, I have no idea what my score is. Nothing great with around 20 QSO's. We all met at the official Hightower/FYBO HQ cabin afterwards for a great dinner, great friendships and a great time. The highest concentration of QRPers per square foot since PacifiCon! And also great to meet the spouses and children that also came along and enjoyable to visit with them as well. Turns out the owner of the motel is a ham (WA6UET) but has been inactive for years. He came out and shot the bull with us about ham radio every ten minutes. Almost a pest, but the old spark was firing back up in him. Finally he asked if he could call CQ and have one of us help him as he didn't know how well he'd do with the code. Well, he made a few CQ's with no answers, but he was tickled to death just putting RF on the air for the first time in years. We have a new QRPer there, I think. The weekend was a blast, and really enjoyable hooking up with fellow QRPers from both NM and AZ. The ScQRPion gang are gung-ho QRPers to the core, and just a bunch of great guys. Thanks to all the ScQRPions for a great contest, great time, and great hospitality (except of course that little matter of my missing log book -hi). I was going to figure out how far we all drove to get there compared to some other part of the country, say Chicago. But it is around 200 miles from Phoenix to Pine Top, it was 230 miles From Socorro, probably 300 miles from Albuquerque, and of course Tim K5OI drove 150 miles to my house to go another 230. Now that's got to be like going to Chicago from Toledo or something just to get FYBO'd. Thank goodness we don't have toll-booths out here! Hasn't ended either, which explains why I'm sending this over a week after the event! So, I used my home station in the basement using battery power. The beauty of living in Minnesota is that the basement temp is below the 65F needed to use a multiplier more than 1. The bands seemed noisy to me here, and I probably worked as hard as I ever had to pull stations out of the noise. The highlight of the day was almost when I nabbed Bruce in Alaska, but I just couldn't hear all of his exchange. He was patient and I received most of it, but never heard "AK" even though I knew what I was listening for, or his power. Don't you just hate when you clearly hear your callsign DE his callsign, then the signal fades as he sends the part you wanted? Too bad, and I'm sure the problem was more on my end than his 8^). I wasn't on the air continuously and never tried anything after the NA stations began, so I managed only 17 QSOs. But I did manage 14 states, and had my second ever QSO with Ade. Haven't done the math yet, but I also turned down my power to 950mW for the first time in a contest. With the noise, I was still able to work whomever I could hear. Pretty cool! 72. The plan was to use a right angle structure to hold the SLV support nail, then drive the car onto the horizontal part of the right angle. That worked and I'll place a pix on WWW page if it turns out. The right angle structure was simple: a vertical 2x4 bolted onto the horizontal flat piece of 1/4" aluminum stock. The vertical went up quickly and tuned 15/20/40m OK. Radiation was no doubt poor on 40m even though the SWR was good. One trick worth mentioning, not original with me, was to place a 2m mag mount on aluminum foil for coupling onto the car trunk. That allowed the car to act as a counterpoise without the need to drill holes. Then used a 5/8 wv 2m in its normal place on the mag mount as the lower part of the SLV. A clip was supposed to connect the tip of 5/8 wv to the SLV coil, with adjustment on the coil as needed. Well, no coil this time, just a vertical #22 wire. Combination of vertical antenna and propagation gave good contacts to west coast (& local) but few QSOs in midwest. Those of you that sat in a car know what I'm gonna say. The seat stayed warmest, feet were coldest, and everything else was just plan cold. Unusual for Atlanta metro, 38 degrees F in the park, 36 F at the weather station. Rig was FT-840 turned down, marine battery, TFR paddle, ATU. Ran 5 watts, worked most stations heard, but not all. Best DX was Bruce, KL7JAF, AK, 449 <--> 449, some QSB. Had 17 S/P/Cs in 37 QSOs during 3 1/2 hours operation. 15m 9 QSOs 20m 26 QSOs 40m 2 QSOs total points 20,128 If you contacted AA4RP, it was special.
