I sat in 30 degree temps with intense wind chills (thank goodness for down). I don't remember a winter typhoon warning being posted, do I? Worked 33 stations. Had some fun, and now is time to thaw out. BRRRRR - we must be nuts. Lessons learned? 30 degrees feels much colder with wind chill - much much colder. If you key fast enough, you will keep the blood going in your fingers. Wear big headphones - they double as earmuffs. Sub-Arctic temperature is not quite enough cold to generate super conductivity. Only CW/QRP could get me to sit like an idiot in those conditions for hours on end. If you have extra batteries, wear electric socks - my feet are still frozen. Called him, and as I started the exchange, my paddles started misbehaving. Acting very quickly, grabbed a piece of paper and tried to clean the contacts. Of course, while cleaning, I was sending gibberish over the air. Started the exchange again, and still sent gibberish. I could send a few letters, then "Dah"s would start appearing at inappropriate times. Now, N6WG is still waiting patiently for the idiot he's contacted to begin making sense. -- The idiot realizes it's a keyer problem, not a paddle problem. That's it! - quick as a flash I grabbed the straight key and plugged it in. Heard a solid tone as if it were locked down. Quicker than a flash I unplug the faulty straight key. (no moss grows on my brain) - Panic - (I'd plugged the mono plug into the stereo paddle jack, and couldn't figure out why it didn't work) - Panic - Maybe the keyer had a loose plug/jack (has happened) hook it back up, wiggling each plug in its jack. Try again. Gibberish. N6WG says thanks for the great "contact", but, he had other fish to fry. Unhook the keyer. Check the 9V battery - it's 3.45 volts. Replace battery. Now my keyer is a CMOS III that's in a Home Brew case with special switch buttons. A thing of beauty, take my word for it. But when you take it apart, the buttons tend to get screwed up if you're not very careful. So, after reassembly, I pushed all six of the memory buttons several times to be sure they were operating freely. Plugged everything back into the rig which has been sitting there on N6WGs frequency. Relax a minute or two, double check the connections and put on the phones. WOW! There's a very loud signal right on N6WGs frequency. Wait!!?? Was that my call he just sent??? How did he know I was listening here?? I've been off of the air for 5 minutes, at least. There's my call again - what's he saying?? (YOU IDIOT, IT'S YOUR KEYERS MEMORY, IT'S BEEN SPILLING IT'S GUTS *ON THE AIR* BECAUSE YOU PUSHED ALL OF IT'S BUTTONS) So, I managed to embarrass myself several times in a very short time. A little later, I heard N6WG again, and completed the exchange. His 599 was with 1 watt!! Bob was very kind. He said nothing about me QRMing his frequency. Is this FYBO fun or what? The SE Ohio Radio Adventure Team, consisting of Eric McFadden WD8RIF, Mike Hansgen AA8EB, and John McCutcheon N8XWO, along with guest Len Touth KG8SF, operated from the Athens County Fairground Kiwanis Shelter. First I should mention that Thursday and Friday were spring-time balmy--gentle breezes and temperatures in the upper 60s. (Can this e February?) Today, however, found Mother Nature delivering strong, gusty winds, temps hovering about 35 degrees, and spitting snow. Mike and I arrived at the site about 10am local time. I had previously purchased a 20' x 40' piece of 4-mil plastic sheeting and had cut it into five 8' x 20' pieces, for it was our plan to wrap the open picnic shelter with plastic. Mike and I fought the wind for the better part of an hour, having the wind tear the plastic from the staples almost as fast as we could insert them. Finally, Mike had to drive to the hardware store to buy a roll of Duct tape, which we used to reinforce the staple points. We were able, finally, to erect the plastic walls, and they served admirably as wind breaks. Mike and I then installed the 80/40m fan dipole from our Field Day arsenal, tying one end to the halyard of the flag pole, and the other end to a line thrown into a tree. We also threw a line into the tree to support the end of my W3EDP antenna. (I wanted to try it "in the field", in preparation for a trip to France later this year.) We set up my QRP+ station and Mike's Scout station on the picnic tables, and set the lab-grade digital thermometer on the table. Len arrived, and set up his S&S TAC-1 and LDG QRP Tuner. I hooked up the W3EDP antenna and tuned it to 20m. Len took the 80/40m feedline. Mike waited patiently for an antenna. (Later, he installed the 20m delta loop from the FD arsenal when as-yet-unlicensed Tom Witherspoon arrived to see how crazy QRPers can be.) We decided that we'd operate indepently with our own calls. Mike and I quickly discovered that even QRP rigs can't operate on the same band. Len showed the rest of us how it's done as he quickly generated pile-ups on 40m. By the time he left about 4pm, he'd accumulated 33 QSOs. I found 20m to be pretty slow going, and worked 11 QSOs before retiring to allow Mike to use the band. Mike worked 6 QSOs in very short order using my QRP+. (He'd somehow managed to turn the sidetone all the way down in his Scout and couldn't fit the screwdriver in to turn it back up.) Sometime during the course of all this we fired up two kerosene heaters, which managed to keep the drafty plastic-wrapped shelter about 42 degrees, some four degrees warmer than the outside--but a lot less windy! We decided to drop the antennas before darkness hit, so shortly after Len left we took down the antennas, took down all the plastic, and even removed the several hundred staples. Lessons: We learned that a winter Field Day can be fun. We learned that even 42 degrees without wind can be cold, and 38 degrees with gusty wind can be VERY cold. We learned to unwind a bit of string from the spool before throwing the weight into the tree. (In the far future, small children will look into the tree and wonder how the spool of string got there.) We gained a deep and personal appreciation for how sailing ships can be moved by the wind, as two of us wrestled to staple plastic to the shelter posts. We learned that headphones are a useful but not perfect in allowing us to hear CW over the slap of the wind-driven plastic. We learned how terribly useful a memory keyer can be when hands are cold. And we learned that we aren't crazy enough to stay out until midnight playing radio when it's 42 degrees in the shelter. (I have a sincere respect for those of you who braved real cold for more than the six hours we stayed out.) Same time next year??? 72, Eric -- W. I decided to wait until 11am local, to get 'some' warmth. While I was packing up the stuff, a neighbor called, and was frantic. Pipe had burst, and water was everywhere. I ran over, shut off the water to her furnace humidifier, and it turned out, it was so cold, the air through the furnace room vent had turned the pipe to ice! Bad oman! I returned home, finished packing, set up operation in the snow, and found I couldn't send cw worth a damn with gloves. The sun was out, and I took the gloves off, and got down to business. Worked NG1G, my first VT, and started switching back and forth between 40 and 20M. Worked my younger brother, Joe, AB7TT, :-) with a huge 59 signal booming in. Then, after about an hour of operating, I noticed the clouds had come in, the temp dropped from 29F to 26F in a matter of minutes, and my hands were shaking, even though I put my operating hand in my pocket between contacts. Then light snow....falling on my QRP+ and me. Time to end this craziness, and pack up. No one told me that RG58 turns into hardline at 20+ degrees :-) Sort of stuffed it into the car, to let it warm up. I made 8 contacts in an hour, if I count Paul, NA5N. Dwight (WA6NAE) and I set up in a park overlooking San Francisco Bay, under a cloudless blue sky with green hills around us. Temp was about 50F when we started setup, rising to around 65F out in the sun during the day. We stayed in the shade to keep the operating position temp under 60F :-). Dwight worked 20m cw and I worked 40m cw. His Sierra and my QRP+ sitting about 1 ft apart with NO interference or receiver desensing. Surprised us both, but very pleased. I had the QRP Autotuner on my rig, as my pre-cut 40m halfsquare wound up resonant at 7315 kHz! Still trying to figure that one out. Had some tall trees to hang our skywires from, a halfsquare for me and a halfsquare beam for Dwight on 20m. He worked every station he called, so I guess it works just fine. Found a nice place to set up by the side of the dirt road running through the park. Got all our gear unpacked from the handcart we used, set up the card table and gear, and then went to hang antennas. Had a small problem. Hung up our two insanely great antennas in appropriate tall trees, even pointing in right directions. Gathered up feedlines to run to gear and discovered my 40m feedline was about 20 ft too short. Can a tree be too tall? So, we picked up the card table with the stations and moved it into a thicket closer to the antennas. Got a lot of puzzled looks from passersby, and a few inquiries as to what we were doing, sitting in a thicket! Boy, there were times when I thought my QRP+ had shut down. I could find no calls or QSOs going on in the cw portion of the band. Kinda spooky. Then , all of a sudden, several stations would fire up and off we would go again. Oh, well, we had a great time, and are looking forward to QRP to the Field. Just finished our tally--49 Qs on 20m, and 33 Qs on 40m, for 33 S/P/C and 528 points. It was fun recognizing all the familiar callsigns as I worked through the log, trying to read our writing after the fact. We had operated from 1800 UTC to 2300 UTC. The temperature had risen to 47 deg. F, then the wind hit. Darn,... The wind was over 30 mph out of the WSW. We could not operate the whole time period due to a previous committment. However, we did have fun, and heck yes we would do this again next year. I think I had counted over 54 contacts in my log. I don't know what W5BI had in his. It was a joy to talk to everyone out there. NA5N & KK6MC/5 & I had a great QSO, on 40 meters cw. They were south of us ~ 84 miles, on the windy plains of the Pound Ranch. N6CNY & I had chatted for a short period of time too. Yeah, N6CNY was a dupe, but we had still talked, in between contest exchanges :-) . I did not work one Az. station :-( . There were 2 other contests on, during FYBO. I have 2 photos of the aircraft, since he had made 2 passes over us @ 400 feet off of the deck. We could hear the drones whistling, as he had passed over us. (1935 UTC). He was making East to West, and West to East passes over the Rio Puerco (New Mexico) area. It was a pleasant surprise to hear AL7FS calling me. AC5AM was a powerhouse here (599), also KV9X, W0DC, K1MG, AB7ST, KD0CA, W5BI (obviously), & KA0PQW, all were S-9+. Noticed WQ4RP in the log too. Did anyone notice the pile up on W1VT @ 1809 UTC on 20 meters (14.059 Mhz) ? Nice job Zack. I had kept calling, but it was not to be :-( . The FYBO photos will be sent to Joe-AB7TT (uuencoded of course), plus W5BI will probably post our photos on his Web page (http://www.flash.net/~w5bi/), in the future. We could see Ladrone Peak to the south of us (Riley, NM is on the west side of Ladrone), Mt. Taylor to the West & the Jemez (pronounced Hey-Mez) to the north of us. A fantastic vista to behold. Sounded like a great idea, but I also agreed to handle some packet messages for a local emergency drill in the afternoon. And I'm fighting off a cold. Well, nothing to stop me from setting up my camp station in the backyard. So, I rummaged through my wire antennas and found a 20m folded dipole. Its short and would be easy to get up, and my only "contest qualified" QRP rig is a 20m Explorer anyhow. I have a 30m Explorer II as well, but no good for the tests. And I didn't expect much SSB action, ruling out the Cascade. (Well, I do have a 49er, too...) Temperature was hovering around 30 and looking good for a decent multiplier. Battery was charged and ready. So, just had to untangle the fishing line on the ends of the dipole, about a 20 minute job, and hoist it into the air. Finished up about 1710 or so. Packet activity was scheduled to begin around 3:00CST so I had a few hours. It was great to hear so much activity for a new contest. I was in and out, working for a period, then warming up my herb tea, eating lunch, etc. Talked briefly on the phone with Dave, KG0ZT, who was playing the contest on 40m across town. The temperature seemed to settle right around 28F. Got as high as 31 and as low as 27. Darn - didn't make the x6 multiplier! (It was 6F this morning.) At 3:00, I was busy finding "just one more" before I would head in and switch the packet over from APRS to the freq used for the drill. Finally broke myself away, contacted the packet station at the drill and learned that they weren't really ready for me yet. Great! Knew I left the power on to the Explorer for a reason. Found Dave on 20 to get me Minnesota. Hm - what's this white stuff collecting on my gear? And why am I shivering? Looks like it's time to pull the plug. I never heard any lower temps than my 27, but I figure someone must have seen lower, especially after sunset. Still, it was lots of fun and great to hear calls I recognize like NA5N and K4BP. It was a good idea and thanks to the AZ group for taking it on and making it happen! Final tally was 27 Q's and 16 states. With multipliers, I get 14,720 points. Still not in the big leagues, but at least it sounds impressive! 72. When I got up Saturday morning the temp was 50, which is unusual for northern New York this time of year. By FYBO time, the temp was down to 30, extremely windy and raining/snowing/sleeting. Before the contest started I had to repair my dipole for the second time this winter, the west leg is now at 5 feet off the ground instead of 50. After a late start, I fired the rig up on 20m and immediately heard AB7TT with a pileup. Couldn't work him so tuned around, heard a few others that I couldn't work so I found a freq to run on. Everything was great most of the afternoon, except when the N6WG QSO came (you're not the only one that had problems when working them Bob). The wind had picked up considerably and as N6WG was beginning his report the power flickered on and off a few times. So after waiting for the keyer to reset and asking for a repeat I did explain to them what had happened. Around 2100z, I decided to take a break and watch MST3K on TV. But then the wind knocked a tree down on the power line and the power was out for 3 hours. No problem, I'll just hook the Sierra up to the battery, plug in the straight key and go back at it. During that time I was only able to work one station, W8KC, and only after bugging him for the QSO (sorry Paul). Do I get to count the battery power and 2w mults for that QSO? I might even be able to claim the low temperature mult for that one too since the furnace was out too. Once the power came back on I finished up the last hour and got N4BP for QSO number 50. Well I had to settle for a quick 2 hour escape from the family, but I did make it out onto one of our frozen lakes. I ended up driving my van out on Eagle Lake, when I got there there was no wind for the kite, and nice soft snow was coming down. The worst part was the temp had been rising all day, we started at 10 when I got up, and now it was a balmy 24 (above zero), so much for the big mult. Well it was up to my "ham sticks", I had one for 20 and another for 40 meters. I threw the rig and keyer on the dash, plugged them in and found 20 meters hopping, spent a hour there and then screwed on the 40 meter stick and did a hour there, then it was back home to see if the house was still standing. The ham sticks did a great job, not sure if being parked on the ice helped much but ended up with 38 qso's from the lake, did alittle from the home shack and ended up with a total of 57 qso's, not bad for only 3 hours on the air. KV9X decided to finish his NW-20 kit last weekend in time for the FYBO Field Day Event. It went together okay, so a quick trip to Radio Shack for a few connectors completed the hardware. On saturday morning I packed up Marcia's (KC7MCW) mountain bike with the gear, tofu sandwhich, and a jar of hot coffee. I rode about a mile or so 'till I got to the Woodland Park Zoo. It is a really good spot beacuse there are many trees and picnic tables, many sheltered from our famous rain-fall. (Seattle) The antenna went up (INV VEE) though it could have been much higher, but I only had about 15 feet of coax. :-0 It is a Bic Flamethrower with alarm wire elements ... cheap and doesn't tangle. Had very few visitors ... partly because all those trees made for a lot of shade on an otherwise unusually sunny day ... we even had shadows! At many point I heard strange screams from the bushes and though some kids were up to no good, but then it dawned on me ... those jungle sounds are REAL! I was at the Zoo, you'll remember! Those monkeys kept me company from the time the antenna was up until I packed up. :-) Anyway, the band (20) was in good shape, except for some QSB and a few QSOs were made ... some easy, some hard. Thanks for all who entered! The NM and AZ stations were all very strong here ... must have had a pipeline. Had to pack up around 2:45 to go drop off some stuff for a freenet orientation meeting, then went off to work putting together a data package fro the EPA (fun). Maybe I should start off by saying that I have HATED 20 meters for the last 25 years. However, having a little gain, and some directivity may change my mind... My yard is about 225-feet long, and steps from a 160-foot road frontage to 90-feet about 1/2 of the way back. I can put up all sorts of long, skinny antlers, so the 1-wave sloper, loosly based on the "Super-Sloper" in the December 1995 (???) QST was the antler of choice. During the CW Swweps this last November, I realized that I was on 20 more than 40, a real change for me. Also, I have been working 20 CW on a "random" basis more than the past. Surprisingly, I am making contacts, and enjoying myself on the band. The frosting on the cake was this weekend... It seems that, of my 18 QSO's on the FYBO FD, 13 of them were on 20 Meters, and it was a case of "I called, and they came back..." Later this weekend, it was 8 QSO's on 20 and 2 QSO's on 40 for the CQC QRP Test and the same quick answers. Saturday's performance made me think that a dipole, up in the clear, and aligned for the Left Coast would be good, so I strung one up, 35-feet up, broadside to the Coasts. The 1-Wave sloper beat it hands down. Every time that I threw the switch, the Sloper won. Folks, it's hard to beat results like that, and the antenna is the simplest "gain" antenna I have EVER had. For those that didn't catch the thread on this before, the Sloper is 1-wave long, or 68 feet @ 14.1 MHz. The feedpoint is 1/4-wave from the high end, or 16.5 feet. The high end is about 25 feet up, and the low end is high enough to not get run into while I am out in the back yard (about 7.5 feet) The end insulators are nylon chalk-line, about 5 feet at the top, and about 10 feet at the bottom, so the total overall installation is 83 feet, which happens to be the distance from the corner of the house, next to the shack window to the back corner of the barn. It is fed with RG-8X, directly, no balun or other lossy junk, and the SWR is about 1.5:1 at 14.1, rising to 2:1 at 14.35... I don't care what it looks like on the modelling. It works, and it's better than the dipole at 35'... One will be in the trunk with me when I travel this year, along with the Argo 556... I had therefore abandoned plans for a full weekend ski trek for FYBO. Figured I would just operate from the shack. However, the thermometer plumetted friday night and there was some new snow on the ground by saturday am. One of my fellow scout leaders called and told me his troop was camping out (in tents), so I had an excuse to pack up the QRP+, head to the field, and give the scouts a demo of fybo-style qrp. Arrived mid-afternoon. Temp was about 25 f and falling. Slingshot was useless for getting an antenna up, and ended up just putting the apex of the ladderline fed dipole as high in a tree as I could reach while standing on a picnic table (about 12' !). Tweeked the tuner, called cq, and WQ4RP comes back right away! Operated for several hours, and my low dipole and numb fingers produced only a half dozen contacts. The scouts were interested though (It's amazing when you find a teen who has NEVER HEARD OF "MORSE CODE"!). Temp was 18 f and still falling. I joined the scouts for a great outdoor supper, then headed home (after dropping off one sick and cold scout) to finish fybo from the shack. Final tally was 38 qso's from home, 6 in field, 23 spc's for 11,868 points. FYBO is a great idea and I think it will really grow! Is anybody collecting all the "lessons learned", for use next year? I plan to pack one of those thick kindergarten pencils - I don't find the keying too difficult with gloves, but logging is another story! Thanks to the AZ SQRPions for a great event. 72/73, John PS. The closest we came was a few years ago when we sloped a half wave 160M dipole from the platform to the woods north of the transmitter site. It was a dismal failure even though we also ran out a 500 foot Beverage. Even before the FYBO was announced, W4OVU and I decided that this would be the year for a Field Day effort from that platform. The FYBO was perfect for a trial run! We hastily made our plans, gathered what we thought we would need, and headed for the TV tower at about 9AM on Saturday. It took us two trips to transport all our goodies up to the platform. The elevator inside the tower is quite cramped, so Bruce ran the controls from inside the cab while I carried our two plastic lawn chairs on the roof. On the ground, the wind was very light, but quite brisk from the South at 550 feet. We found a relatively sheltered spot behind some equipment cabinets to set up our table and chairs. We first set up the station - TS-130V and notebook computer with a deep cycle marine battery under the table. We next attacked the antenna. I had miscalculated the diameter of the rail on the platform and my antenna bracket was too small to fit around it. So we simply attached the mounting bracket to one of the smaller angled cross members. The antenna to be used was my old faithful 4 band trapped ugly vertical, made about thirty years ago from a discarded tri-band Yagi. We mounted it in a horizontal position, broadside to the NW/SE and supported it near the top with nylon string tied to the tower. A second string was attached to keep it from swaying. No attempt was made to tune the vertical, but the SWR was already within acceptable parameters for all four bands. Setup was completed at 11:45, just 15 minutes before the start of the FYBO. No time to try any test QSO's, just a quick briefing on the rules and how the computer logging would be handled. A quick check of 15M determined that we would begin operation on 20M. We got off to a slow start, but it seemed like our setup was working about as well as we could do. After about 50 Q's, our notebook computer started beeping and then the screen went dark. Later we determined that the 7V outboard regulator had gone intermittant. Fortunately, we had prepared for that possibility and went to paper logging. We both struggled desperately to pull many weak signals out of the noise, often without success. It became obvious that we were getting out much better than we were hearing. The high noise levels were from two categories. The tower has many commercial antennas side-mounted at various levels including an antenna at 750 feet for WLYF-FM. There has to be an incredible number of intermod products generated with all these transmitters being keyed off and on. Another noise source was the elevator cable - 1000 feet of cable inside the tower swaying with the wind. I've noticed in the past that, when travelling by the WLYF antenna on the roof of the elevator, I could draw an arc from the cable with a screwdriver. Much of our noise must have been from that cable brushing against the inside of the tower. The weather was both a curse and a blessing. Our score had no chance of being competitive with a X1 temperature multiplier; it never dropped below 70 degrees. But it was a beautiful, clear night with a full moon. We had a fantastic view of the city lights in both Miami and Fort Lauderdale, and barely needed even a sweater to keep us comfortable. For meals, Bruce hit the local Wendy's to bring us lunch, and later I took the trip down the elevator to procure dinner at Popeye's. We quit at about 10:45PM since we knew it would take us some time to get all our gear to the ground and back home. It turned out to be a wise move considering the comedy routine we were about to execute. The first load was transported to the ground without incident leaving only the table and chairs for the second trip. At the platform, we manuevered the chairs between tower struts to the top of the elevator while Bruce held the table inside. The table was simple to unload at ground level, but we struggled with those @#$%^& chairs for a good 15 minutes, trying to figure out how to get them to the outside of the tower! It had to be a funny site (if anyone were watching) to see us rotating them in every possible position and try various areas of the tower to fit them through. We finally made it and took off for home at about 11:30. All in all, a successful operation. Even if we can't improve on the receiver noise situation, we should do much better in the "real" Field Day since a great number of the stations to be worked will be in the 100W category. We are even contemplating a return next winter to try a 160M contest... Thanks to all the stations who responded to our many requests for repeats during our QSO's! Apologies to those we just couldn't pull through. Maybe now you understand why we seemed to ignore you, it wasn't intentional! Hope y'all had as much fun as we did. And last, but not least, many thanks to the Phoenix ScQRPions and AB7TT for coming up with the FYBO! Was that fun! I just got the log back last night and tallied the score. I managed 44 Q's with 21 S/P/C etc. for a score of 29,568. Not too bad for a first attempt in a qrp contest. I only managed three ScQRPions ... I heard a couple more on the wrong side of a qso and never managed to track them down. KF4ABV and myself set up at a TV station mountaintop at noon stringing a center-fed zepp off the tower at 120 feet in spitting snow. Dale also brought a Butternut vertical to try, so he mounted it on the tower catwalk. Dale is a codeless tech (for now, anyway) and was planning on working a few in the contest, but we never heard anyone in the novice bands on 40 or 80 running FYBO. He did get on around 2 am on worked several stations in the 80 meter novice band, so I think he is ready for the test. You guys/gals are excellent operators! It was really refreshing to be able to work everyone I called. 20M was fantastic with several Q's at the 100 mw or less level. When someone reported 3 watts and they were 30 over S9, I just couldn't resist dropping the power back. I hassled several of the G contest crowd and worked several at the 2 and 4 watt level on 40, but didn't get the full exchange from them. I even worked a YU on 80 with 2 watts. We also tried some of the 160 SSB contest, but after working you fellows with decent receivers it was too much like work. I really think most of the 160 contest ops were really bootlegging badgers. For me, the best part of operating portable is getting out of the noise here in town and into a quiet site. I haven't missed a field day since I was licensed in 1978, but I think this FYBO was the most fun I have ever had with a radio. 40 and especially 20 were also a challenge at times from TN as I could hear two or three of you calling right on top of each other! I guess you couldn't hear each other due to propagation. I also didn't hear anyone on FYBO after 0330. I guess the band went too long or something as I see in other reports that stations were active. Thanks to all for a great event! I know my friend Dale is hooked on CW (and QRP after the 160 fracas) now that he has spent some time around a rig rather than a bunch of code tapes. We should be hearing him prowling around 7040 soon. 72, Conard WS4S .-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-. . Conard Murray WS4S Glowbugs listowner . . 217 Dyer Avenue ws4s@infoave.net . . These worked out OK, but our biggest problem was the wind. The SLV blew over which resulted in the lower wire coming loose from the loading coil. After righting it I made one contact in 45 minutes with 4 feet of wire on the ground before I realized something must be wrong. Live and learn. Faqvorite quote of the day from Paul. Since I'm not an rabid contester, I decided fun was the name of the game. I decided to stake out a FYBO site at one of my favorite spots on the Pacific strand. My SO and I arrived at Pigeon Point, a bit north of Santa Cruz on Rt. 1, just before noon. The beach head was established and the trusty Radio Shack thermombulator was deployed, registering a balmy 59F. I immediately got to work setting up the W6MMA-modified SLV in the sand. I had originally selected an antenna site on a 20 foot bluff just above the beach, but seeing as how it was loaded with poison ivy/oak, plans had to be changed. A couple strolling on the beach passed me as I was laying out the radials in the sand. On their return trip, they asked what kind of fish I was going for as I was tuning up the vertical for 20m. I explained I was a ham and I was fishing for radio signals and that my rod was really an antenna. They said, "Well, maybe you can talk to Hawaii!" After hooking up the Cascade and tuning to a quiet spot on the band, I called CQ for a few minutes. Well son-of-a-gun! KH6EV comes barreling in! He was obviously QRO and when I gave him the equipment rundown and told him my power output was 3 watts, he understood why his S meter wasn't registering 20 dB over. We had a nice chat and then signed. It was an interesting experience staring out over the ocean, knowing my contact was out there somewhere to the Southwest. I then camped out on a VE6 station who was running a Pathfinders special event station. He was casually chatting with a W4 and both were booming in. No wonder, both were running linears feeding 3 element beams. Couldn't raise either of them after they signed. Further attempts on 20 didn't yield any other contacts, and 80m was pretty dead. I decided to fire up the NC40. This was *interesting* experience. I reoriented my position so the ocean breeze was to my back. The unfortunate side effect was that the wind noise in my headphones lowered the SNR substantially. I did hear N6WG in there, but he was weak. Repeated attempts to call him didn't even net a "QRZ?" Time was getting short and the wind picked up to the point that it wasn't enjoyable anymore. We packed it in and headed home. Later in the evening, I set up the SLV in my backyard and arranged the NC40 on the picnic table. The trusty Radio Shack thermo was indicating 53F at 7:30 pm. My eardrums were nearly pierced when KD6VI, QRP Bob, unsuccessfully tried to contact another station. I gave him a quick shout and we exchanged info. Family responsibilities pulled me away and that was the last contact. Lessons Learned: Select a better site for eastward propagation! The mountains to the East and the bluff behind me really gobbled up my signal! I'll have to scope out a potential site along Skyline Blvd, which courses along the summits of these RF-busters. Alternatively, try a kite-supported vertical. The steady breeze at the beach makes this do-able. Static dissipation requirements noted. While adequate in a quiet operating position, the NC40 needs an additional audio stage. With 10-15 knot winds blowing in my headphones and ocean swells crashing on the beach, it was impossible to hear the really weak ones. Time to cobble up a set of audio boots. QRO audio is a *good* thing. The Cascade needs a thorough going over. The PA exhibits some instability and the output power should be a tad higher. Now where'd I put those round-tuits? Get a multi-band, multi-mode rig. Although I was well-prepared, I would have liked capability for more bands without carrying a number of monoband rigs. Despite all of these shortcomings, I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I can't wait for QRPTTF! 72/73, Bob - W3CD From owner-qrp-l@Lehigh.EDU Mon Feb 24 16:56:44 1997 Received: from fidoii.CC.Lehigh.EDU (fidoii.CC.Lehigh.EDU [128.180.1.4]) by oucsace.cs.ohiou.edu (8.7.6/8.7.1) with ESMTP id QAA10130 for ; Mon, 24 Feb 1997 16:56:42 -0500 (EST) X-Received-x: from fidoii.CC.Lehigh.EDU (fidoii.CC.Lehigh.EDU [128.180.1.4]) by oucsace.cs.ohiou.edu (8.7.6/8.7.1) with ESMTP id QAA10130 for ; Mon, 24 Feb 1997 16:56:42 -0500 (EST) Received: from Lehigh.EDU ([127.0.0.1]) by fidoii.cc.lehigh.edu with SMTP id <35267-39114>; Mon, 24 Feb 1997 16:55:53 -0500 Received: from nss2.CC.Lehigh.EDU ([128.180.1.26]) by fidoii.cc.lehigh.edu with ESMTP id <35226-39114>; Mon, 24 Feb 1997 16:55:17 -0500 Received: from smtp.utexas.edu (smtp.utexas.edu [128.83.126.2]) by nss2.CC.Lehigh.EDU (8.8.5/8.8.5) with SMTP id QAA43016 for ; Mon, 24 Feb 1997 16:55:04 -0500 Received: (qmail-queue invoked by uid 0); 24 Feb 1997 21:55:01 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO 146.6.110.12) (146.6.110.12) by smtp.utexas.edu with SMTP; 24 Feb 1997 21:55:01 -0000 Message-Id: <33120E48.7104@uts.cc.utexas.edu> Date: Mon, 24 Feb 1997 15:56:05 -0600 Reply-To: ghanson@uts.cc.utexas.edu Sender: owner-qrp-l@Lehigh.EDU Precedence: bulk From: "Gary R. He was already freezing to death and the contest hadn't even started, but he was sending a 599 report into Austin with no problem. I accused him of being able to transmit "line-of-sight" from that lofty location across west Texas right into Austin. On Saturday, I could only work a couple of hours here and there, but managed about 18 contacts and snagged 5 (if you count the displaced N4BP roosting in a tower somewhere in Florida) of that desert insect club out in Arizona and New Mexico. I spent a lot of time trying out three different antennas for 20 meters so instead of piling up contacts I was fumbling with antenna wires, but had great fun and learned a lot. I caught Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico on the delta loop, Connecticut and Virginnia on the OFC dipole and Florida and Minnesota on the ground-mounted vertical. The SuperTee antenna tuner loads them all. At one point I worried (needlessly) about my point multiplier and opened the sliding glass door next to my operating station and got the temp to drop into the low 70's. These winter contests in Texas can be tough! Only worked the CQC contest on Sunday for about an hour, but snagged Jim, AL7FS as my first contact on my first call to him. Boy, that guy has good ears!!! I was weak, but he only had to ask for one repeat. Everything else was gravy after that. One of the loudest signals I worked was a 3 watt mobile rig, unfortunately, I don't have the call here at my office, but it was one mighty fine signal. Also heard lots of 1 watt signals that were real "boomers". Wonder what those QRO ops thought? My other amusing experience during the contest was that my only QRO contact in Maryland got his signal clobbered by some really potent QRPer's. I completely lost him to QRM and he was running a 100 watts. I loved it!!! You QRPer's can clobber my QRO contacts any day. My next goal is to get more than an hour and a half at a single sitting to see if I could "run" a few stations from the same frequency. Learned a lot just listening to some of the real pro QRPer's out there. What fun. This time around I just searched and pounced and only missed a few, but it seems to take more time and the contacts/hour suffers a bit. A hearty thanks to the AZ and CO clubs for sponsoring great fun. Looking forward to it for next year. See you during the next contest. James KK6MC drove down from Albuquerque and we met for breakfast then off to the Pound Ranch. Got setup and on the air around 11am with the temp at 43. Warmed up to 47 about 4pm, and by dusk it had hit 39 (my last QSO from the ranch was with AE0Q at 39.3 degrees, not 39.9 -hi). We used Jim's TS-850 with the wick turned down on 20M with the St. Louis Vertical and the W6MMA coil mods. That was the easy antenna to put up. Used my mini-rack on 40M with an inverted vee and some guys supported by two pieces of 8-ft EMT tubing. Putting up that antenna is when the wind started blowing. It stayed up; the SLV blew over once (it was self supporting) so added a couple of guys above the coil and it held the rest of the day. It was chilly out there and Jim and I remained relatively comfortable until the sun dipped over the mountains and the wind started howling. Seems like everytime I go to the field lately, that darn wind starts blowing. Do we get multiplier credits for the wind chill factor? Jim and I played musical stations, taking turns on both 20 and 40M. I left for about an hour, went back into town, grabbed a disposable camera, and returned to take a few pictures for the ScQRPion fellas. We were pretty chilly by the time we tore down the stations and got back to town, but that green chili enchillada warmed us up fast! We discussed a bit how we were getting too old for this crap. (Nah! We'll be back next year). I unloaded the car, put the rig in the cold shack, plugged in the antenna and actually heard some CQ FYBO's ... so worked two more (K6MW + K7TP) in the last 15 minutes of the contest with 37 degrees in the shed. As a few others have mentioned, my log looks like the who's-who of QRP and QRP-L. It was a blast and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Quasi-final tally: 34 Q's x 16 SPC's x 4 Afield x 2 battery x 4 temp = 17,408 I did work buzz/chirp CO8HJ in Cuba and after some lousy Spanish, managed to extract a 30W and 20C from him to complete the exchange. Bob KI0G in Steamboat Springs, CO sported the LOWEST temp at 10F (brrrr). I also got a kick how everyone at home latched on "72F" for the temp. Joe, AB7TT, headed a crew up to the frozen rim, and I and a cast of others set out for the more temperate White Tank Mountains as the SYBO (Sun Your B_ Off) half of the effort. Most of the guys pitched camp in flats at the base of the mountain, but I have always been a sucker for hill. I lugged a trap vertical, my home brew 40m, 20m, and 15m rigs and a man killer 24 AH battery, to the top of a 300 ft mini-mountain along a few creature comforts such as a chair, a table, an ice chest, and refreshments. As you can tell, I packed *heavy*. I just wish I had a picture of it. It was very humorous to have a constant stream of hikers puff to the top, proud of their accomplishment, only to find me there, sipping my diet Coke, sitting in the shade of an oversize umbrella in front a large table full of equipment, next to a trap vertical from which radiated a spider web of wires running everywhere. Like I said, I packed heavy. I have been *very* impressed with the success that Floyd, NQ7X, has had in the fox hunt with a ground mounted vertical with *lots* of radials. Just prior to the contest, I read with great interest the discussions of resonant vs non resonant radials for verticals for both ground mounted and elevated installations. I chose to try a hybrid approach..... Raise the antenna slightly, to about 12 ft (not quite ground mounted), and add thirteen 40m radials sloping down to the ground (non-resonate on 20m). I was very pleased with the results on 20m, where I spent the majority of my time. 15m was basically dead here. I heard some QRO stations and decided to call a few times, but never got a response. 40m was good for a quick contacts early on in the contest. I was located about a mile away from the main crew and discovered that it was indeed possible to work the same band as them. For the most part, we tended to stay at opposite ends of the QRP activity, and suffered only minimal interference. I often had a pileup on my signal. Now I know in some small measure how the Fox feels! It was great working so many guys that I have read about here on the list. I worked Randy, AB7TK, in ID twice even though I have never managed to get him even once when he was the fox! I even worked Joe, AB7TT and Mike, NQ7K, part of the FYBO frozen chosen crew on the rim (those 229 reports were *really* generous!). I worked a total of 81 stations, in 35 different states/provinces/countries (HP1AC called running QRP!), in a field location, using alternative power and a low temperature of 60 degrees (Rats!, No temperature mult!). for a total of 22,680 pts. I would have loved to stayed and work 40m into the night, but I packed it up at about 5:30 (0030 UTC) because I did not wish to negotiate the mountainside after dark with all the junk I had to get back down the mountain. And yes, I did go home with a sunburn (SYBO!). Great contest! Bottom line is that we definitely froze our b____'s off, made about 150 Qs total, and had more fun than mere mortals were ever meant to have. :-) Now for the gory details.... (it's a bit long, but hope to entertain you as we go). We initially received some flack when FYBO was first announced. "Oh sure, of *course* you guys in AZ would want a winter field day!" So there was only one thing to do - make sure that I and a few (fool)hardy souls faced some of the coldest wx out there. With nearly half the state at 5000+' elevation, no problem! We broke up into two groups for the expedition. Glenn (KC7SXW, co-worker and new ham) and I would drive up Friday afternoon to set up the site, and Mike (NQ7K) would arrive early Saturday morning. Figured we'd all use our own calls to put more sigs on the air. Friday got off to a bad start. Turns out that all three of the campsites we'd been considering near Mingus Mtn were closed. Argh! We were welcome to hike in from the main road, but with camping gear *and* multi-rig ham gear, that didn't sound too fun. Since we couldn't think of a way to make Mike carry all of our gear, we looked else- where. :-) Luckily Glenn hikes northern AZ alot and had an idea - a ridge overlooking Prescott, elevation 6700+'. But were there any trees?!? Was a bit nervous, but decided to go for it. It paid off! Glenn had picked an incredible site. Great dropoffs to the east and west, 40' trees, awesome views. Pay dirt! One hour of sunlight left, so we started setting up the main antenna - a fan dipole with 20m and 40m elements. Using N5EM's patented method of "tree fishing", I could get the line up 30' at least, but couldn't get it to come back down. :-/ Swiss army knife took a beating. Finally Glenn went to his truck and pulled out a 14" socket wrench. Now I don't know how many of you have ever tried throwing a 5 lb wrench high into a tree, but when you bounce it off the tree trunk and it starts falling back down on top of you, it's amazing how nimble you can become. Proactive Darwinism. :-) Finally the antenna was up. Smoke test! The Autek showed a 1.4 SWR on 40m and 1.3 for 20m. Looked good! Plugged in the QRP+ and called CQ. First taker on 40m was N.J. - not bad for late night 40m! Terrain was clearly giving the sig a nice boost. Next was QRP Jim (N0OCT) who was quick to point out how warm it was in his house. Talk about rubbing it in. :-) (And yes Jim, I'll stay clear of the donkeys...). By 0500Z the temp had dropped to 28F - good sign for FYBO temp multis! Chatted with Jeff (KN6YD) for a second 2xQRP QSO, then pounced on a QRO MS ham as a backup MS QSO for QRP WAS. Then worked another(!) QRPer - Gary (KJ5VW), who offered to let me thaw out by the fireplace if I could make it to TX. Hmmmm. Tempting! Almost got in the truck. Finished the night by working an XE2 on 7040. Must've mistakenly thought there was a Fox around to QRM. :-) Went to bed with a log full of QSOs under the wide open sky. Nirvana. The night was incredibly beautiful. Full moon was bright enough to read by, no clouds, no noise, no wind. No heat. :-) Low that night was 22F. Downright balmy! Next morning we set up the other dipole, and sat waiting for the starting gun, chomping at the bit. And they're off! Started off a bit slow. I was in the Novice section of 40m, nobody was answering my CQs and I couldn't hear anyone calling FYBO either. Such was the way the Novice band would go for me all day. :-/ Finally headed off to 20m. Hey! RF! Off I went, while Glenn hit 40m and slugged through his 1st FYBO QSO and only his 4th QSO ever. The bands were a-hoppin'! An hour into FYBO, Mike showed up bearing sacred gifts of Pop Tarts and hot chocolate with those tiny little marshmallows - alright! It was in fact a shallow trick to lure me off the rig so he could get on. It worked. :-) The rest of the day was spent juggling two rigs between the three of us. I had a trump card though - Mike was drinking more than me and hence needed more "tree watering" breaks. Like a rabid vulture I'd pounce on the unprotected rig when he'd venture away from his post. Frankly, I was out of control. They need to have a 12-Step program at the Betty Ford Clinic for QRP contesting.... We had a good system - Mike and I would each take turns working 20m dry, then trade off again to work the next wave of FYBO Folks. Added in a few jaunts to 40m for good measure. Couldn't believe all the familiar callsigns out there! Non- stop grinning all day long as we filled up the logsheets. It was amazing how strong all the sigs were! Night began to fall, and Mike announced that he had to leave to have dinner with his wife and in-laws. Hey, wait a minute! What's this hanging out for the sunny wx then heading for the homestead when the temp drops?!? But that meant no more jockeying for air time, so I wasn't complaining. Besides, he left the Pop Tarts and hot chocolate behind. :-) Only stressful part was toward the end of the contest. The temp had been steadily dropping all night, then leveled out at 30F. NO! AAAIIIEEEEEEE!!! Cruel Fate, why must you mock me?!? Finally, with 30 minutes left, the temp dropped to 29F. Wahoo! Masochism at its best - "I wish it sucked more!" Right after the finish bell rang, I heard my callsign echoing in the night air. It was QRP Jim (N0OCT) again, obviously part of a plot to freeze me to death by keeping me on the air, so I wouldn't have a chance to submit my log. :-) Glenn and I camped out a second night on the ridge, while Mike was undoubtedly chuckling at us from a spouse-warmed bed. I vowed to hatch a plot that would put him in charge of checking all the incoming FYBO logs.... :-) Drove home the next morning, stopping in the metropolis of Kirkland (Pop: 300, if you include 4-legged critters) for breakfast, where I encountered the largest pancakes ever produced in the western world. I have photographic proof! Worked 12 hams who were running 1 watt or less. (CA, IL, LA, MO, NC, NM, NY, PA, and SC) Lowest temp received was the ever-suffering KI0G: 10F at 12:51 MST! Unless anyone else heard a lower one, I think we have a winner.... Didn't work a single Oregon station. Hmmmmm. Weird. Where were you guys? Never found *any* N/T+ hams. :-( I tried, guys. Really. Worked 31 states and 2 provinces 2xQRP - Wahoo! A simple antenna sitting high on a ridge really gets out! Final tally for me: 94 QSO Pts (92 QSOs) x 33 SPCs x 4 (Field) x 2 (Alt Pwr) x 5 (29F - Whew!) = 124,080 pts. Mike bagged about 50 QSOs as NQ7K, and Glenn worked his mandatory 5 QSOs (we weren't going to let him off the rig 'til he had at least the minimum :-) ). Fun meter was pegged! Thanks again to all who participated! Don't forget to send in those logs! By the time the random drawing is held, TenTec should have their circuit boards debugged. :-) So.... QRPTTF, anyone? I had been waiting since QRP AFIELD, vlast September, to polish up the old gear and get it into running order so I could freeze my buns off in New Hampshire. I know that the temperature in the northeast is a lot lower than it is hundreds of miles south, so I KNEW I had a running chance. Man, the multiplier was well worth it! Saturday was pretty ordinary except for the temperature. It was so mild in New Hampshire, you would have thought it was the middle of June. I grabbed all my gear, which was sitting in a box PATRICK had played with in my last story in the field. I went to the back side of Greeley Park (a nice city park in Nashua, NH) and took my box of QRP gear out for the big FYBO TEST! The sun was shining, the birds were singing and the teenage Dungeons and Dragons were playing "over there" away from me. I set up my yellow card table, shot my only arrow into a 100 foot pine tree and was ready to connect all the wires. The time was about 12:30 local time and I just couldn't wait to get started. W1KZE - Ken dropped by to see what I was doing and helped me finish pulling the string through the pine tree so my 100 foot vertical was tight and ready. Man, I was psyched! All the connections were mde, my NorCal 40a was turned on and sweet CW warfed through my headphones as I tuned the band. I made a contact with a fellow in Catham, New Jersey who said I had a pretty fair signal. Another QSO 15 minutes later with a western New York station and the signals just kept pouring through my earphones. Another QSO with a our neighbors to the north, Ontario...just 35 miles north west of Niagara Falls. This was great...the signals are getting out, I am hearing GW3s, 9S52s, and even a few W5s were coming through...but then the wind started to pick up a bit. No problem...the sun was warmand the breeze was really strange for February. I loved it! But, the wind really pickep up. I mean, the wind picked up so much that it started to shake the pine trees, mine inlcuded. My log sheets were blown off my operating table across the field I was sitting in and up the street they flew. My note pads was blown in a hundred directions with paper swirling in front of my eyes like a funnel wind had opened its door where I was sitting. Then the trees were really shaking and shook so hard, it pull my tuner off the table onto the ground. The tops of the trees were swaying 8 to 12 feet side to side without a moments rest. The roar of the wind was crashing in on me also, so loudly that the CW I was listening to was blocked out. I couldn't hear a thing except the roar of thousands of freight cars rolling by my station scaring the hell out of me. Then the thunder cracked across the sky with a rocket trace of lightening overhead. My operating table was hovering before my eyes and was off the ground. Honest to God, I thought I was in the Wizzard of OZ! It was scary and I scrambled to gather all my gear and head for the car. I got the small things into the radio box, ran to the car door and threw it into the back seat. I ran to the site again and folded up my card table and ran to the car again, only this time I opened the back of the station wagon and threw in my yellow table into anything it landed on. Finally I went back for the antenna and yanked that sucker off the tree. I rolled it up as fast as I could without kinking it, for what reason I don't know. I ran to the car, jumped in and headed home. Phew, this was a contest? Yes, to see how fast you could tear down a station in case of an emergency. Well, I won! I went home and was so peeved for having only three QSOs that I then went to gym and worked off my stress! Big time. But, now, wouldn't you know the rest of the story gets better. Thirty minutes after all this occurred, the sun came back out, the birds sang andI sat in my car and cried! See you September 20 for QRP AFIELD. George Resvoir, Chattahoochee River Lowest Temp: 45 w/HEAVY rains :) Well, my camping-buddy/bro-in-law and I managed to get the pontoon boat loaded and running about 3:00 Friday afternoon and headed out from Lake Point Marina on the Chattahoochee River near Eufaula, Alabama. Folks in the southeast will recall that Friday was a day of some heavy-duty storms. As we left the marina black clouds were rolling in and the protected water we were traveling on was pretty choppy. Knowing that the open water of the lake would be pretty bad and that the intended campsite on Gopher Island (abt 15 miles south) would be a problematic mooring site for the boat we opted for the nearby state park campground. We had to pass under a highway overpass to get to the camp and as we neared it the bottom fell out. This wasn't a normal heavy rain, mind you, but one that slung down stinging drops of rain. I kept looking around expecting to see hail hopping around the boat. Heck, the velocity of the rain would've driven a tough-hided badger into hiding! It was so heavy that we had to hold the brim of our gortex hats up because the rain was knocking it down obscuring our vision. Vision was abt 20' ahead of the boat, but we were just barely moving.... We finally found the campsite, found a spot for the tent(easy to find a good spot for a tent when it's a lashing rain going on.....look for the spot that ain't covered by water!). Dried things up a tad, had supper, and croaked early. Saturday morning we awoke with a beautiful blue sky and abt a 2' rise in the river level. Bill started working on his famous omelets and I strung a dipole up (Bill did a great job on the omelets, but I only got the dipole up abt 10'.) A started calling CQ and first got N5GW in Vicksburg, MS. Running a homebrew, battery-powerd xceiver at a whopping 1 watt into a zep at abt 40'. He had a gud signal, abt a 349. He gave me a 569. Good QSO. Solid copy. The only other QSO before we loaded the boat back up was with K2SSE in Brooksville, FL. He was running 4 watts into a rotary dipole. Good solid copy on this one, too. The nice part of this one is that I had email from him waiting on me when I returned home. He'd told me that in the QSO that he was at a hamfest. He had a ham (QRO) friend with him at the tailgate during the QSO and the guy couldn't believe we had such a good QSO with 2 and 4 watts. Maybe a convert in the making? :) Well, the omelets got ate, the coffee drank, things packed up and we headed out to the river to make the 20 mile trip to Gopher Island. The river/lake was choppy, the sky was blue, 'twas a nice ride. We arrived at the island to find the nice, sandy beach that was the SW point of the island covered by water....the recent rains had covered my spot! :( Not to despair we eased around the point to the SE side of the island and found a good mooring spot, crawled up the bank and found an excellent campsite. Nice view, too! :) Got things set up and raised the 1/4 vertical. Had a little trouble here and the HB thin-walled aluminum antenna buckled as we raised it. Luckily I had an extra piece of tubing in the boat the size of what I needed and had the tube cutter, too! Repaired it and raised it. Didn't work any CW that evening.....enjoyed some Fosters instead. Did watch a beautiful sunset and an equally beautiful moonrise, though! Went to sleep to the tune of the choppy waves slapping into the shore. Sunday morning our alarm clock went off at sunrise......hundreds (thousands?) of Canadian geese sounding their horns, all yelling for a place at the breakfast table along the shoreline. I never came out of the sleeping back to crank the 40a up....it was kinda comfortable there! Got her going and proceeded to contact with WA4OOD in Cary, NC (RST 569), KB3AWR in Pittsburgh, PA (RST 559), W4LVP in Johnson City, TN(RST 569-armchair), and W4WF in Bristol, TN (RST 549). Had a blast. Not a lot of contacts, but enough to keep me interested. Anybody happening up on us as we camped would've really been scratching their head.....me sitting their with headphones and key and Bill practicing magic tricks (he's an amateur magician). Well, we had to go home. We loaded the boat, cruised the shoreline for an hour or so. Headed back out to the main channel for the trip back home. The wx was changing and the swells on the lake were beginning to get fairly deep. Water splashing onto the deck of the pontoon boat...it was great. We got out in the center of the lake where it was the roughest we killed the motor....it was time for our traditional "going in" dinner. Viennas, sardines, canned smoked oysters, celery(gotta have the greens), chunk tuna, es crackers! It was great dining! After toasting with some "Very Old Ray" (local rye) we checked our fleece, button down the gortex, cranked 'er up and made the 15 mile dash back to the marina. It was a great weekend all the way around...camping, hamming, enjoying nature. It'll keep me pumped up for a while....but withdrawal will come and we'll have to do it again.....QTTF? :) Had a 75 mile drive home, was exhausted. :) Enjoyed the weekend....FB 72/73 Ed Welch KF4KRV QRP-L #873 Luverne, Alabama Crenshaw County - Grid EM61 +--------------------------------------------------+ ----------+ Norcal 40a es Straight Key es Wire-wrapped Trees +---------- +--------------------------------------------------+ > Isn't "time" a 4-letter word? < From owner-qrp-l@Lehigh.EDU Tue Mar 11 20:32:37 1997 Received: from fidoii.CC.Lehigh.EDU (fidoii.CC.Lehigh.EDU [128.180.1.4]) by oucsace.cs.ohiou.edu (8.7.6/8.7.1) with ESMTP id UAA06320 for ; Tue, 11 Mar 1997 20:32:33 -0500 (EST) X-Received-x: from fidoii.CC.Lehigh.EDU (fidoii.CC.Lehigh.EDU [128.180.1.4]) by oucsace.cs.ohiou.edu (8.7.6/8.7.1) with ESMTP id UAA06320 for ; Tue, 11 Mar 1997 20:32:33 -0500 (EST) Received: from Lehigh.EDU ([127.0.0.1]) by fidoii.cc.lehigh.edu with SMTP id <35365-15401>; Tue, 11 Mar 1997 20:30:20 -0500 Received: from nss2.CC.Lehigh.EDU ([128.180.1.26]) by fidoii.cc.lehigh.edu with ESMTP id <35058-36392>; Tue, 11 Mar 1997 20:28:47 -0500 Received: from calvino.alaska.net (root@calvino.alaska.net [206.149.65.3]) by nss2.CC.Lehigh.EDU (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id UAA20446 for ; Tue, 11 Mar 1997 20:28:41 -0500 Received: from jim-pc (anc-p36-56.alaska.net [206.149.124.56]) by calvino.alaska.net (8.8.0/8.7.3) with SMTP id QAA21163 for ; Tue, 11 Mar 1997 16:28:34 -0900 (AKST) Message-Id: <3326063C.7AF7@alaska.net> Date: Tue, 11 Mar 1997 16:26:20 -0900 Reply-To: larsennc@alaska.net Sender: owner-qrp-l@Lehigh.EDU Precedence: bulk From: "Jim (AL7FS) and Nancy (KL7NY) Larsen" To: "Low Power Amateur Radio Discussion" Subject: FYBO Tale of Woe - AL7FS MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7BIT X-Mailer: Mozilla 3.01 (Win95; I) X-Listprocessor-Version: 8.1 beta -- ListProcessor(tm) by CREN Status: RO FYBO Tale of Woe(tm) AL7FS My tale of woe is being generated because of the woe that the contest rules have placed upon me. I was crushed by Joe Gervais , AB7TT, when he posted that in order to be entered into the FYBO drawing I had to have worked 5 stations during FYBO. What kind of discrimination is this? Is it a U.N./alien conspiracy derived to harm the hapless, propagationless, Alaska and other DX stations that tried and tried and tried to make contacts? I would have thought that for DX stations there would be a slightly lower limit on this drawing rule . The five station rule obviously was meant for stations in the Lower 48 (L48). For the masses, to make five contacts in the L48 is totally easy. If you can t make five QSOs when you live in the L48 you are not really trying. Now, in my case, I really did try. All of the L48 stations were creating QRM up the y___ y___ and there I sat trying to break though the mess. The really quality stations, the ones that listen in between CQ Test are the ones I was able to get to. :-) Thank you goes out to: WA5WHN (NM) N4ROA (VA) N4SO (AL) WU7F (WA) Getting back to my whining.....N4BP refused to work me...sniff! I called and called and called and called and called and called and etc. Time was centered around 2226Z with too many others calling the monster station of BP. In fact, I am not so sure that they weren t on there as a form of monster AL7FS Filter . It must be true as indicated by my only being able to work four stations. The propagation up here was so bad for the most part that I have to think my storm was worse than that other sad station on the east coast that complained about the wind and such. I had to contend with auroral storms, AL7FS Filters, poor A-K indexes, and black helicopters plucking my signals out of the air and refusing to let them reach the huddled (it was cold, right?) masses. So there I was, running QRO QRP of almost 5 watts, trying like crazy and then this Joe Gervais fellow adds insult to injury by declaring that DX stations, over 1450 miles from the closest L48 state have to have five QSOs just like the masses. Not fair!! I need special dispensation for my four contacts. I need to be in the drawing so that the US Lower 48 QRP operators won t get a bad name for the way they treat DX. So there you have my tale of woe. Joe said I had to write it up if I wanted any chance in FYBO. So as my final whine, I was even coerced into writing this saga. DX stations unite!! And so goes our second entry in the "My FYBO Sucked More Than Your FYBO" competition. :-) Yes Jim, you're in the drawing. Well done! Heehee. Here's the scoop folks. When setting up a winter field day, we were worried that some folks (through no fault of their own) would try their honest best and still not make the minimum QSOs for the TenTec drawing. Storms, battery failures in the snow/rain, attacks by roving bands of rabid ice weasels, etc. Or even terrible condx in DX states. At the same time we wanted to keep the minimum QSO requirement to encourage participation. Hence the FYBO Tales of Woe(tm) category. So if there are any of you out there who felt cheated by nature, downtrodden by events, but tried your best for as long as humanly possible, we want to hear about it.
