A battery pack made up of Alkaline D cells will give you better cold Wx performance. Another trick is to make the battery pack so that you can snuggle up to them in your sleeping bag or place under your jacket to keep them warm. If money is no object, lithium cells work very well in cold temps, with the added advatage you will need less of them and they have a good weight to size ratio. NiCads would also be a good compermise between the Alkaline and lithium cells. Maybe it's about time we design a rig that runs on 6 volts. A Rx that runs on 3 V would be even better. 72, Steve, KD1JV....In the White Mountains of New Hampshire "Melt Solder" From owner-qrp-l@Lehigh.EDU Tue Jan 20 12:31:08 1998 Received: from fidoii.CC.lehigh.EDU (fidoii.CC.lehigh.EDU [128.180.1.4]) by oucsace.cs.ohiou.edu (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id MAA16140 for ; Tue, 20 Jan 1998 12:31:06 -0500 (EST) Received: from Lehigh.EDU ([127.0.0.1]) by fidoii.cc.Lehigh.EDU with SMTP id <12666-22060>; Tue, 20 Jan 1998 12:30:19 -0500 Received: from nss4.cc.Lehigh.EDU ([128.180.1.13]) by fidoii.cc.Lehigh.EDU with ESMTP id <12666-22060>; Tue, 20 Jan 1998 12:28:17 -0500 Received: from TABOR2 (ns4.webaccess.net [198.93.194.11]) by nss4.cc.Lehigh.EDU (8.8.8/8.8.5) with ESMTP id MAA13130 for ; Tue, 20 Jan 1998 12:28:02 -0500 Received: from SG2939B.col.hp.com - 204.163.168.64 by webaccess.net with Microsoft SMTPSVC; Tue, 20 Jan 1998 10:23:54 -0700 Message-Id: <34C4DD44.157F@webaccess.net> Date: Tue, 20 Jan 1998 10:22:16 -0700 Reply-To: n0tu@webaccess.net Sender: owner-qrp-l@Lehigh.EDU Precedence: bulk From: Steve Galchutt To: "Low Power Amateur Radio Discussion" Subject: Re: Cold Wx Batteries References: <3.0.3.16.19980120113156.26af4ad2@mailhost.ncia.net> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-To: "\"Low Power Amateur Radio Discussion\"" X-Mailer: Mozilla 3.01 (Win95; I) X-Listprocessor-Version: 8.1 beta -- ListProcessor(tm) by CREN Status: RO OK....My secret weapon for keeping the batteries warm is one of those little six-pack "soft" coolers with a couple of the chemical hand/foot warmers...or hot rocks if camping indian style. During the sunny part of the day I wrapped my battery in black T-shirt using the sun to keep things warm. I also 'slept' w/my battery (don't tell the XYL) at the foot of my sleeping bag the night before FYBO...just to keep it idling at 60*f! I saw very little change in my gelcells voltage-wise from room temp with these arangements. I also taped one of those little temp indicator strips on it's side...to keep me informed....Your mileage my vary TU/Steve Steven Weber wrote: > > Howdy all, > > If you plan on operating FYBO, leave your gel-cells at home, as these will > roll over and die in cold temps.
