Railfanning Hot Spot
Fostoria, Ohio

Pictures:

Fostoria, in northern Ohio, is a hotbed of CSX activity, and has a strong NS presence. The CSX and NS tracks cross at the old B&O depot, and traffic is controlled by CSX's "F Tower".

The well-preserved former B&O depot now serves as the Amtrak station. Both public parking and safe train watching can be found here. To get to the depot, drive to the town center, then follow the signs to the Amtrak station.

Fostoria has a rich railroading history. As one approaches the center of town from the south a well preserved NKP railroad overpass with NKP lettering cast in concrete can be seen. As one leaves town to the south on US23, a B&O overpass can be seen with B&O painted markings. CSX currently uses the B&O overpass and NS uses the NKP overpass. At least one bridge with C&O lettering remains in town, but I neglected to record the location. Railfan Tony Torres informs me that as recently as 1999, the brick interlocking tower remained along what's now the CSX. On the day of my visit, I ran out of time and was unable to see this.

I am told that outside of town there's a large autorack center. I've not yet been able to visit this facility.

My thanks go to railfan Gordon Schmidt for much of this information.
